Mask or no mask

Post by Lisafuller » Wed, 24 Aug 2022 8:37 pm

Now that masks are soon to be optional, I’m wondering what you all are planning on doing. Personally, I’ve gotten in the habit of making faces behind my mask, not to be unkind or anything but rather just as a sort of tick. Not sure I’ll remember to keep a straight face after three years of behind the mask fidgeting. Still, it’s an exciting prospect.

Fortunately, I haven't had that problem as having retired only 6 months before covid hit I've been mostly housebound due to the onset of dementia of my spouse. So I don't go out often except for RC activities as a longtime member/officer of the RC. Even that was curtailed for the most part with meeting like other businesses, via zoom. I've never had the mask wearing habit so I still usually walk out of the house without one and have to go back and get one to the point that all m caps now have an unused mask in the top of the cap just in case.

But yeah, I could see that which you speak of, being very common place and will probably cause some considerable embarrassment on occasion.

During the pandemic I stayed home as much as possible, but as the country opened up I’ve slowly been leaving the house more and more, now I’d say things are pretty much back to normal, except the fact that I still wear masks. So I guess I am excited for this change. It’s worth the embarrassment!

Happy to have masks off and dust off the last shreds of pandemic anxiety off and get back to normalcy
To get there early is on time and showing up on time is late

Seems to be the common sentiment. Only a couple hours to go!

After spending time in Switzerland and extensive time the US over the past couple of months, I have to say it was nice not having to wear a mask all of the time. I still did opt to wear on occasion — but only in confined or crowded spaces, and that was rare.

Are masks still mandatory in the lifts here? Seems like it should be, because it’s often crowded & close quarters.

Nope, nothing about lifts. But you could wear a mask if you choose to.

Not in lifts! Except those in MRT stations, or in healthcare facilities. But that is to be expected.

My condo has had these signs up in the lifts for the entirety of the pandemic, they finally took them down yesterday, it was pretty surreal to finally see parts of the mirror that has been blocked for nearly 2 years.

Everyone I ask says they will keep wearing mask for now, and everyone in the neighbourhood is still masked up. I guess it's here to stay for some time yet. Not sure how much good it does though as I wear mask diligently and still kena covid.

I was masked up as well. Unfortunately I think I got covid from my toddler who I think might have picked it up at her childcare, although she never tested positive when we tested her at home.

However, to be honest, I've had far worse symptoms from "normal" cough, cold and fever than I had with covid. Like for instance, in 2021 I had a really severe infection - I struggled to walk to the neighborhood clinic which is 2 buildings away. I was breathless and I had to stop mid way. Meanwhile, I was out doing midnight jogs with covid.

Masks can actually give a false sense of security, because air is always coming in from the sides unless you wear it very tightly and force all of your air through it — which is not easy.

Safe distancing and holding your breath while briefly walking past people at unsafe distances is far more effective. But even more important is hand washing and avoiding high touch items like door handles, money, etc.

But at the end of the day, everyone is going to get it, and that is not a bad thing - it’s helpful to build herd immunity. It’s the only way we can move past this and get back to normal.

Our symptoms were not too bad but the fatigue was real. It was kind of nice to do nothing for a week except sleep and watch TV. I think we caught it from the queues outside 2 clinics between us and the nearest coffeeshop, so yea, masks are more a psychological safety thing. Nice not to have people sneezing on the yong tau foo though.

When I left the house to go to Jewel today, pretty much everyone was wearing a mask. I thought it might just be because people were more conscious about it airport germs, but when I was in my neighborhood mall it was a similar sight. Not sure what happened to all those people who were so against masks, definitely don’t see them.

At least things weren’t bad for your daughter, I would be really concerned if my daughter was still young. What I’m really worried about is long Covid, I have a handful of friends who still feel the effects of Covid up till today, months after recovering. I think I escaped it, but then again the risk of getting Covid again is always there.
