How are you getting mother tongue Mandarin when mother tongue is based on the Father's race?

I wrote to MOE requesting for the kids to take up Mandarin. They agreed.

It's not mother tongue though. It's Mandarin, yes, as you and your spouse are both Indian, one of the Indian Dialects would be Mother Tongue. What Language are they taking as their 1st Language?

I'm asking as I was the 1st person who managed to beat MOE at their own game back in the mid 1980's when my eldest started school. Back then the rule was if you took you mother tongue at 1st language level you had your choice of second language. But if you took English at 1st language level you had to take your mother tongue (father's language) as 2nd language. At that point in time they never had a English Mother Tongue candidate as western expats didn't put their kids into the local school system (I was the first and it resulted in a 3 month running battle with MOE). I actually beat them with their own rules. If you took mother tongue at 1st language level you had your choice of 2nd language. My mother tongue IS English. So they eventually had to relent and allow her to take Mandarin (They were trying to force her to take Tamil as her 2nd Language). At that point it time we didn't know if we were staying or going back to the US and Tamil would have been worthless in the US. Mandarin, on the other hand gives them a leg up anywhere in the world if go International. My son followed suit 5 years later and both today still use Mandarin, English, Singlish regularly (in their mid & late 30's now).

So what you seem to be saying is MOE has loosened up a bit and no longer maintains the same criteria. That's good to know.

There is one minor issue I see in your profile and that is concerning your income and your occupation. As you are probably one of five original FAANGs the indicative salary range there is a possibility of you being parachuted into another location considering all are Multi-national. Especially in your salary bracket. C level bank employees have the same problems here in getting SGC as they are basically a flight risk for the same reason. It seems that once salaries pass a certain level the chances are success seem to diminish due to the flight potential. Buying a condo only enriches the buyer, doesn't show the Gahment anything at all except being profit driven. Probably the biggest plus is your 3 sons. With that and your foresight in getting them Mandarin may be all that is needed as everything is great (other than the exception mentioned).

I had a good friend here who was a White-Hatter for one of the FAANG's here. He spend a number of years in Washington State, came here for a few years then they parachuted him into China for a few more years. Came back here for two or three more and now he's back in Washington State.

For kids of mixed race, I believe MOE has allowed student to pick MT based on either parent for some time now (technically need approval but I believe it is given).

In the case above, were there any particular reasons you (@Tiger2) cited for the kids to study Mandarin? I.e. don't speak Tamil or one of the main dialects offered (also a pain since not offered at the school in most cases)? I am not aware of MOE allowing kids to swap out of Malay or Tamil just because one finds Mandarin more useful (although apparently it can be done).

Quite honestly I don’t quite remember as it’s been a while but I wrote to MOE when my first one was going to Primary. For the other two I don’t recollect writing to MOE but my wife could’ve.

Am I correct to assume you applied exactly 6 months after your rejection? In that case I’m not sure if the result would be any different but I hope to be proven wrong
