When an insurer stops insuring

Post by x9200 » Sat, 04 Jun 2022 9:31 am

AIG is not going to provide their Global Health insurance any longer. They "arranged" an option to transfer their current insurees to Cigna, however, it seems it may not be like a transparent, smooth transfer but still a subject to full or partial medical underwriting. Now I wonder what about people with medical conditions that were developed during the AIG insurance. Is there any legal protection of the insured person for this sort of situation? In other words, can AIG just says, well, we are not going to carry on with our med. ins. business any longer, you may go to Cigna if you want (we may "help" you a bit with it) but to accept your current medical conditions is at their complete discretion?

I think you need to check your insurance contract to see where it is to be legally enforced. From that, you'll need to check the specific laws for that country. I can't really tell about the USA with the mish mash of insurance crap here... ACA insurance cannot be denied on the basis of prior medical history but other private insurance sure can.
