So interesting, although I’ll probably never be able to make use of one of these dictionaries.

Dictionaries are more for academic purpose or when we are not very familiar with the language. I remember I did use dictionary a lot when I was kid learning Chinese. But probably it is not common that we use them in our daily life. It is inconvenient and not efficient. A much better way to learn is to learn from people, since every phrase is alive in a very specific scenario. This cannot be fully just explained by words. Dictionaries are just based on our real life.

True, dictionaries only give you the technical meaning, but fail to capture the context and nuance of how will be used in real life. Same thing with French, plenty of people who learn technical French have a lot of troubles conversing with actual French people because they have not picked up the French slang which is far more widely used than formal French.
