Bacteria

It is something to do with the bacteria in your stomach. Basically, not all bacteria is bad for you. Some are good, and are required for digestion of certain foods. I think that the bacteria in Yakult and Vitagen are specific good types that have supposedly been isolated and cultured in laboratories.

But...apart from tasting nice and refreshing, I would not bother with them too much. People seem to thrive all over the world without ever encountering a bottle of Yakult and Vitagen in their lives.

Make your own

Both are really sweetened yogurt. The sugar inside is actuall somewhat counterproductive, as it encourages fungus and bad bacteria. But most people here seem to think you have to sweeten yogurt. If you want to try the real thing and a cheaper version, just buy natural yogurt. Or make your own. Boil milk, cool to 35-40 deg C, add a tablespoon of live yogurt (any natural yogurt will do) and let it set overnight at 30-35 deg C (Singapore weather is fine for this purpose). All Indian households do this and eat fresh yogurt daily. If you must, you can still add sugar, or better honey or fresh fruit, but we just like it plain.

Prefer Yakult

For the difference in taste, Yakult taste sweeter than Vitagen, Vitagen is more 'milky', live more residue to the tongue than Yakult. I prefer to drink Yakult. I think both are about the same functionalities, only think is that i think yakult is more exp than vitagen.
