Best vegetarian meat alternatives
Hi, just wondering what everyone’s favorite non-meat sources of protein are. I’m largely plant-based, so most of my protein comes from tofu, eggs, and impossible meat. The only other alternatives I know about are seitan, tempeh, beyond meat but I’ve never tried any (with the exception of beyond meat, but hated it). Anything else?

Seafood. How do you justify eggs if you are veg based. Eggs come from chickens. Chickens are meat unless you are talking about mammals. If that's the case, the Seafood qualifies okay as it not mammalian. May as well eat fowl as well, as the chicken egg is the same without the bone, unless you go to the 'peens and eat balut.

I think you may have gotten vegan and vegetarian diets mixed up. A plant based, vegetarian diet permits eggs and other animal products like honey and dairy, just not meat or seafood. A vegan diet is the one that excludes all animal products, including eggs and dairy. Seafood wouldn’t be okay, consuming it would make one a pescatarian. I was more so referring to plant based meat alternatives, not meat alternatives.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Sat, 22 Jan 2022 4:49 pmSeafood. How do you justify eggs if you are veg based. So now diets are like homo-sapiens. no longer male & female but umpteen different variations and 7,465 different pronouns. Homo-sapiens were born with molars to grind vegatable matter and incisors to cut and tear meat. Who are we to tell the creator his/she was wrong?

For tempeh, I highly recommend tempeh by Chinatown brand that you can get from Redmart.
Personally, I am not a fan of Beyond meat, Omnimeat and all these new brands. Highly processed and expensive. I would rather choose Quorn, their products have been on the market since years. It's processed as well, but at least you can buy plain quorn pieces, and prepare with any seasoning you like.
I also a eat lots of chickpeas, beans and different kinds of lentils (check Indian stores and/or Indian brands).

Yes, it doesn't give me any gastric issues, and I think I am just lucky - tolerance to legumes can vary a lot between people.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Jan 2022 6:43 pmYou obviously don't have gout issues like a lot of us. lol
On contrary, I don't eat any onion or garlic, because my body hates it.

I see your point, but vegan and vegetarian diets are some of the more established diets compared to “fad” diets like whole30 etc. You’d actually be surprised at the number of different “sub-diets”, for vegetarian alone there are lacto-vegetarian (veg and dairy only), ovo-vegetarian (eggs and veg only) and even lacto-ovo vegetarian (veg, eggs, and dairy) enough to make your head spin!sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Jan 2022 3:02 amSo now diets are like homo-sapiens. no longer male & female but umpteen different variations and 7,465 different pronouns. Completely agree with you about BeyondMeat and Omnimeat- terrible and overpriced. I do think that Impossible meat does a great job of replicating the taste and texture of beef, just that it’s also on the pricey side. I’ve never really had tempeh, except once with my Ayam Bakar (as a side dish) and even then I didn’t really enjoy it. Any suggestions on how to prepare it?nelyanne wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Jan 2022 10:44 amFor tempeh, I highly recommend tempeh by Chinatown brand that you can get from Redmart.

I don’t have gout (and hope to stay that way), how do chickpeas affect those with gout? Didn’t even know that was a thing, always thought they were very healthy.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Jan 2022 6:43 pmYou obviously don't have gout issues like a lot of us. lol

Same here, beans don’t give me any issues. Dairy on the other hand always gets me. I suspect I have lactose intolerance, but refuse to admit it to myself. I just can’t live without my milk, eggs, and cheese!nelyanne wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Jan 2022 8:40 pmYes, it doesn't give me any gastric issues, and I think I am just lucky - tolerance to legumes can vary a lot between people.sundaymorningstaple wrote: ↑Mon, 24 Jan 2022 6:43 pmYou obviously don't have gout issues like a lot of us. lol

Not chickpeas (those I just don't eat) but beans. all sorts of germinating beans, red beans, green beans, pinto beans, lima beans, bean sprouts, soy beans in all their guises. I've even brought on gout flare-ups during the August Mooncake festival. Cannot touch red or green bean mooncakes! LOL. I rarely have any problems with gout any more, save a rough night on the town with too much Corona Extra (my favorite tipple for the past two years! LOL) cervesa. Always keep a card of colchicine at home for emergencies. I've otherwise, eliminated most of those foods that are loaded with Purine (and most are/were my favorite foods until 35 years go when it was diagnosed).Lisafuller wrote: ↑Tue, 25 Jan 2022 3:44 amI don’t have gout (and hope to stay that way), how do chickpeas affect those with gout? Quorn. I tried only minced and I have not liked it any near to even consider as meat substitute but then I was not looking for giving up meat. Quorn is sold also as nuggets and burgers I believe.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Sat, 22 Jan 2022 2:15 amHi, just wondering what everyone’s favorite non-meat sources of protein are. Re: Best vegetarian meat alternatives
Why though? If it's not for religious or compassionate reasons, a meat based diet is just superior to a plants only one.
Re: Best vegetarian meat alternatives
Imagine the anti-vaccine mentality:
“I won’t allow these unknown substances into my body”
I wonder how many eat these meat substitutes and have any idea what the hell is in them?
My PhD peer actually got a job in the industry, and pretty much indicated high sodium is the least of one’s worries about these products.
The amount of engineering to generate texture on these products are probably resource heavy, and you certainly have no idea what you are taking into your body.
For now, I’d definitely take meat over such substitutes any day.
If I were to go vegetarian, then leafy salads, beans and tofu. In actual fact, Indian vegetarian food probably has the greatest dish and flavour diversity, I could probably remain on an Indian vegetarian diet longer than any other (i.e. won’t get bored).
