Same here. I went for a health screening two weeks back… although I’ve seen some improvements, it’s not as much as I’d hoped for, given the diet & exercise regime I’ve stuck to over the past 2 years.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Tue, 28 Dec 2021 3:29 amHi, not sure if it’s the new year approaching or the post-holiday season guilt but I’ve found myself doubling down on my fitness kick.
I don’t think there are any AF branches opening up in the near future… even so the staff member who I spoke with said that rates are “standardized” across all branches so the only way to lower them would be to sign on for a longer term. My worry now is that I’m not sure whether this is just a sales tactic or if this is indeed the case and prices are not negotiable. I’m quite keen on signing up with AF because the nearest branch is a mere 800m walk from my condo, I think the walk there and back will make for a good warm up and cool down so ideally I’d like to have my membership be based there. How do you like your membership?Addadude wrote: ↑Tue, 28 Dec 2021 10:06 amIf you want to get the best value for money, look for an Anytime Fitness branch that is just about to open. They will have special introductory rates that you will pay for as long as you maintain your membership. My neighborhood AF had opening rates of $68 per month, which some members are still paying now, 5 years later. I signed up just as it opened and I'm paying $88 a month. The catch is, you have to exclusively go to that gym for the first 3 months. After that, your key fob will give you access to any AF branch so you can simply go to the branch nearest to y0u while continuing to pay the introductory rate. Bear in mind that the different AF branches will vary in terms of space and equipment. For example, I use my local AF gym (150 m from my door) for most of my workouts but on "Leg Day", I go the Harbourfront Branch because it has some specialist pieces of equipment that I really like.
Stepped on the scale for the first time in a month the other day, was horrified by the number. Immediately started on a caloric deficit and signed up for BB fitness classes. Are you still overweight after the 2 years? Or in the healthy range but just hope to get healthier? It’s the latter for me but after all the holiday season binging I’ve been doing I’m treading a very thin line.malcontent wrote: ↑Tue, 28 Dec 2021 6:41 pmSame here. I’m now adding more exercise and tightening portion control even more. I mainly need to see bigger improvements on my weight and blood pressure to reach the healthy zone.
I'm pretty sure they're fibbing. Each club is an individual franchise so they have some degree of flexibility across their pricing. Also heartland leases are considerably cheaper than CBD or edge-of-CBD leases, so there is bound to be some variance in pricing. Anytime Fitness @ Keppel has just opened it's doors and is still offering discounted rates.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Tue, 28 Dec 2021 11:34 pmI don’t think there are any AF branches opening up in the near future… even so the staff member who I spoke with said that rates are “standardized” across all branches so the only way to lower them would be to sign on for a longer term. Close proximity to home was my main driver for signing up too. My local gym is literally a 4 minute stroll from my front door. I'm quite a big fan of AF. I really liked that my local gym used to open 24 hours so I could literally have a workout at anytime. Unfortunately, since the 'circuit breaker', it's opening hours are much more limited now (from 6am weekdays, 8am weekends). As I mentioned in my previous post, each AF gym is somewhat different in terms of the equipment and space they have. (Although they all have the basic stuff.) This means, when I want a change, I can just pop over to a different gym and have access to different equipment or if I need to work onsite somewhere, I can workout in a gym closest to my temporary work location. So, I'd recommend it if you can find a pricing that suits you.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Tue, 28 Dec 2021 11:34 pmI’m quite keen on signing up with AF because the nearest branch is a mere 800m walk from my condo, I think the walk there and back will make for a good warm up and cool down so ideally I’d like to have my membership be based there. My BMI has been around 5 kilos beyond the healthy range for the past 2 years, despite my efforts, virtually unchanged. I clearly need to be more aggressive to make a dent.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Tue, 28 Dec 2021 11:38 pmStepped on the scale for the first time in a month the other day, was horrified by the number. About the pricing, that’s what I thought as well. Since each branch is independently owned and operated there is no way pricing is standardized across the board, moreover with each branch being slightly different in terms of facilities and equipment it would not be appropriate to charge the same fee.Addadude wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 9:11 amI'm pretty sure they're fibbing. 5kg is not too bad, if you’ve been maintaining your weight then at least you know you haven’t fallen too far off the path.malcontent wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 11:12 amMy BMI has been around 5 kilos beyond the healthy range for the past 2 years, despite my efforts, virtually unchanged. My bad cholesterol dropped, most likely because of all the oatmeal — 5 days a week, and it’s the real deal… Harraway's NZ Whole Grain (NTUC online). I only add hot water and brown sugar, Pagoda brand dark brown, raw, unrefined. I believe this kind of sugar is healthier… my diabetic risk shows very low (despite family history).
Another thing that maybe helps is for butter I stopped using margarine or spreads many years ago — I only use 100% real butter and I keep it in the wine fridge so it’s reasonably spreadable.
Yes, the wine fridge is a good option for things you want to stay cool but not cold. Overseas chocolates (not formulated for the heat here) is another one we immediately put into the wine fridge, keeps them at just the right temp. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups anyone? Haha, that is a very rare treat on my diet!Lisafuller wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 1:27 pm5kg is not too bad, if you’ve been maintaining your weight then at least you know you haven’t fallen too far off the path.malcontent wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 11:12 amMy BMI has been around 5 kilos beyond the healthy range for the past 2 years, despite my efforts, virtually unchanged. Keeping butter in the wine fridge is GENIUS. I can’t believe I’ve never thought of that. Normally to spread my butter on toast I’m scraping and scraping with a knife to the point of nearly ripping the bread.
The shower set ups vary from gym to gym. I trained a couple of times at the Bukit Timah branch a few years ago and I recall that they had 3 or 4 small, individual shower/changing rooms. As a rule, AF does not provide towels (with the possible exception of some of the CBD branches which might have them for rent) but they usually have soap/shampoo dispensers. The whole AF approach is no frills but good quality, basic gym equipment that is all you need to work out effectively. For me, I much prefer showering back at home - less to carry to and from the gym.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 12:41 pmHow is the shower situation? We’ve got quite a bit of spare capacity since we no longer entertain due to COVID, sounds like I’ve got a new use for the wine fridge! I’m not a huge fan of Reese’s, never really liked peanuts or peanut butter, and especially not mixed with chocolate. My whole family thinks I’m crazy for this, especially my daughter. My personal favorite chocolate bar (if you can even consider it a chocolate bar) is kinder bueno. Chocolate covered wafers filled with hazelnut cream. The absolute best.malcontent wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 2:00 pmYes, the wine fridge is a good option for things you want to stay cool but not cold. When you say BT, I’m assuming you mean the Beauty World branch? In Bukit Timah Shopping Centre. The cluster is no longer a thing, so I’m not sure how I would use this as my bargaining chip. Perhaps make a point about insufficient SMMs? We’re you able to negotiate your price when signing up?Addadude wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 3:15 pmThe shower set ups vary from gym to gym. FYI, the BT branch of AF was a Omicron cluster (3 members) and had to suspend operations for some time for not following COVID-19 safety measures properly. I imagine that had an impact on membership so you might be able to negotiate a better price.
I see, are the showers divided by gender or mixed? My concern is privacy and safety, I don’t mind bringing my own towel and soapssmoulder wrote: ↑Wed, 29 Dec 2021 4:02 pmShower facilities are individual cubicles which can be locked from the inside. Whichever AF I have been to. Much more private than some of the other gyms I've been to such as CF, FF and TF.
As addadude mentioned, facilities vary. One of the places I go to has an excellent set up for hardcore lifters with many Olympic bars and bumper plates, platforms, power racks. This is a bit more than what they have at the other locations.
