Sadly this is becoming more and more common in the US, pretty sure it’s because the justice system is so lax when it comes to petty crimes. Most of these people steal and then resell the merchandise and make a good buck from it without ever getting caught.

Sure, some of them might have cars... but I can guarantee you that people who have enough don't thieve or rob for a living. Criminal activity springs from poverty and lack of access to opportunity.

It's not the legal system. It is the economic system that allows so many to fall into poverty, to have no opportunity.

And what do you mean, "legal system enables petty crime"? You think that we ought to be handing out 25 year prison sentences for theft? The USA already incarcerates a larger percentage of its population that any other nation in the world. And this includes the really horrible countries like Russia, Cuba, and Rwanda.

No, what you are seeing is the long term consequences of systemic economic inequality. It's created by racism, by crap educational institutions, and a "level playing field" that isn't level at all. It's going to get worse. The world is filled with corrupt government officials (and that includes the USA), who are only too happy to take bribes from the rich to ensure that the inequalities remain or become worse.

Well put. Agree, my point was just that the system perpetuates inequality, which manifests itself in crime and social unrest. Clearly it’s not just the criminal justice system thats the problem- to say so would be rather reductive. Obviously the education, social welfare, and general social issues like racism etc deepen inequity.
