SC Rejection

Post by not_as_smart » Fri, 15 Oct 2021 5:31 pm

Long time lurker here wanted to add my details as a data point for whatever it is worth.

Age : ~50
Time in SG: 10 Years (PR for 5 years)
Ethnicity : Indian
Occupation : IT
Income : 150K+
Spouse : Homemaker
2 daughters both in local schools.
Applied for SC in 2020, got rejection after 18 months.

Guess age is not on my side anymore so maybe that was one of the factors (other than ethnicity)

Age, Ethnicity are the main reasons.
Try once more after 2 years.
What do you do in IT?

Dear experts,

I reapplied for SC since the last post and got rejected again. There are some small changes to my situation. Not sure what major changes the gov would be looking for.... To re-iterate:

Age : 50
Time in SG: 13 Years (PR for 10 years)
Ethnicity : Indian
Occupation : IT - Technical sales director
Income : 300K+
Spouse : works for a recruitment company -
2 daughters both in local schools.
Applied for SC in 2020, got rejection after 18 months.

Not sure if I should appeal the rejection or wait and reapply? The age factor keeps getting worse so not sure of the reapplication if I have to wait for a year or two.

You have not mentioned the processing time for this recent application, although longer processing times does not always end in favor, like your previous application.

In my opinion, if you appeal now it is still going to be the same reject and you may waste away 1 year for next application. However, it is up to you to decide.

You got your pr for your family in 3yrs after coming to sg, which in my opinion, luck has already played a lot of role for you. :D Citizenship will take time and may be ICA sometimes considers to keep certain families just in PR, if it is not really beneficial (as per their sg growth requirements) for them to convert to citizen. It happened to one of my colleagues who is also 50+.

Also, your timelines are a bit confusing. Previous post you say time in sg as 10yrs (5yrs as PR) and now you say 13yrs as time in sg and 10yrs as pr. So if you have got pr for family in just 3yrs then i think you should not worry much.

After 50 getting SC is a 50-50 chance. You may apply once after 1 year and if not granted, continue to reside on your PR.

Age and ethnicity are the main factors which are making it hard for you.

I judge that when someone reaches the age of 50, the gahmen starts wondering if that person will be able to support themselves in retirement. Singapore is paranoid about an aging class unable to support themselves and becoming wards of the state.

For a citizen, being age 50 would mean contributing to CPF for 25 or 30 years. You have 10 years. I think if you were to demonstrate sufficient investments/funds to support yourself into your 90's, your chances would improve.

As it is, you could do the math, figure out how many more years you will work, estimate your future CPF benefits at retirement, and see if you could actually make it. Perhaps that could be the basis for an appeal.

How old are the kids? Eventually, they can only apply on their own (may be eligible to do so already).

I'm sure many people have the means to survive here, whether the funds are inside or outside of CPF. At this point in time, the calculus may go beyond that. I'm sure they will take on some older parent/couples with kids, as it is just a cost of doing business.

A while back someone posted the Aged Parent of an SC success rates. Unfortunately, the success rate isn't very high, and I guess everyone can make their own inferences as to why.

For the OP, perhaps you can try again. While there is no shortage of people in the queue, you never know (at the same time, it may be best to plan for the status quo). Best of luck and regards.

I guess it's age and ethnicity as well..50s in considering aging (not young), and Singapore's an aging population which needs to be supported by healthcare, so this would put more pressure on the healthcare system for this age group. My thoughts..

I would think the same in other countries? Australia..? Understand once you are 45 years, you can't easily get PR or citizenship?

3. Studied in SG Undergraduate 2012-16
4. Working in SG from 2016 July onwards
5. Area of work in Finance field
6. Applied for PR in 2017 Mar
7. Got PR in Oct 2017
8. Applied 1st time SC in Oct 2019
9. Got Married in SG – registered in SG
10. Wife is EP (Indian)

Usually SC applications for indians will take time. Your undergraduate degree in sg has helped to get you PR in just 5yrs of being in SG, however for SC it is an entirely different ball game. Even when you appeal, you should be having a few points to list out to support your application that was not included in the original application. In fact, you are right. An appeal wont change the decision, until you have something left out at the point of application. May be its better to start having kid. Also, you have not mentioned whether your spouse tried pr by herself or under your sponsor before.

There are many indians who come to sg and study in SMU and other courses, which may get them pr in a few years of graduation. However, SC is an altogether different story. All you can do is profile building and patience to wait and apply.
