Step down converter suggestions

Post by 2020expatUSSG » Thu, 14 Oct 2021 12:49 pm

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some help finding the right step down converter for my Vitamix I brought into Singapore for the US. It’s a Pro 500 Series. The specs are as followed:

HP: 2.0-peak
Electrical Ratings: 120 V, 50/60 Hz, 11.5 Amps
Watts: 1380

So far I was able to find the items below but then I discovered that although it met all the specs, the converter says 500 watt and the other one I found says 1000 watt so I am now wondering if i need to match with what the vitamix is in wattage or higher. I’m not an electrician so maybe I can disregard this but I’m wondering if this is connected to whether the Vitamix will work or not.

Looking to see if anyone has been successful in getting their US Vitamix to work in Singapore or whether anyone can guide me to the right step down converter that’s compatible.

Thank you.

Update:
So after doing some research definitely looks like I’ll need a step down converter that’s at least the 1380 watts my blender is. Any recommendations on 1380 and up step down converters would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you need a step down transformer that is at least 1380 watts. In actuality, you'll want a reserve built in, so at least 1500 watts, preferably closer to 1800 watts.

Stay away from cheap Chinese crap. Seriously. Crappy transformers, wiring that's not heavy enough, improperly insulated. You need to buy a transformer that has been approved by Spring or whatever agency in Singapore now tests and approves electronic devices. Sim Lim Tower has shops that sell this kind of stuff.

Stay away from devices marked as "auto transformers". They work but do not give you any isolation protection from the hot mains, and auto transformers exist primarily because they are cheaper to make.

Expect to pay around $150 and up to get what you need in a quality product. And it will be a bit of a box.

This is an example of what I am talking about.

One other thing. You are running an electric motor. US power is 60 Hz, Singapore power is 50 Hz. Expect your appliance to run a bit slower.
