Post by Wd40 » Fri, 09 Jul 2021 7:32 pm

PNGMK few years back asked this question why there are not enough Indonesia engineers.

This post explains it a bit:

I think PNGMK is correct with his observation but this articles actually adds to the puzzle. Assuming, the quoted text concerns mostly general education stage (primary/secondary) Indonesia should have an army of perhaps not that well educated people but surely a sufficient pool for the next stages. So what happens next? No inexpensive domestic, tertiary education available?

Something seems to be clearly wrong. I work in a multinational, technical research environment and I can recall one person only who is from Indonesia (and she does now more admin type of the job). Granted I don't know the background of all our staff, I know at least a few from countries like Vietnam or Thailand not to mention India, China, Malaysia.

The very few clever Indonesian engineers I know have all left Indonesia
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

It still doesn't explain why you don't see many Indonesians on global stage.

I turn on Bloomberg TV and the number of Indian wall street bankers and analysts I see really amazes me. I think over the last few years the divide between Indians and rest of Asians has become even bigger. I see so many Indians in America and UK in various places including politics, business. Over the next couple of decades, I think Indians will further widen the gap as we see China now more focused inward rather than outward.

Speaking about China vs India in the context of the respective diaspora and what they are achieving...

It may be just anecdotal, but my brother in law, who works as a professor in Berkeley had some interesting observations regarding Indians vs Chinese. Partially based on his interactions with both Indian and Chinese students. And partially based on what he observes in California based tech companies.

1. The Indians tend to be more outgoing and expressive, possibly because of a greater degree of comfort with English.

2. So many more Indians in Silicon Valley and tech companies around Cali in general.

(disclaimer - I don't mean to boast. It was just an observation and comes from a non Indian who is also a non PRC Chinese)
