Which school for IB?

Post by venrick » Sat, 26 Mar 2005 12:16 am

I might move to Singapore this summer and I would like to have some advice regarding schools .

I have a 15 years old daughter that will start the last two years of the IB (International Baccalaurate ) programme .
I found several International Schools in Singapore offering this programme :
International School of Singapore
Overseas Family School
United World College

I need to choose one of them , I hope to be able to visit them soon but in the mean time can somebody give me their opinion or share their experience with any of these schools ? Reputation , quality of education , accesibility with public transport .

I have experience of all three of these schools, either as a teacher or a mother. Here is a brief outline of their strenghts and weaknesses:

ISS - small, friendly, good teaching. However it has many weak students (ESL, learning disabilities) Location not great and very shabby, poor facilities.

OFS - bigger, therefore less personal, good teaching on the whole. Great location (off Orchard) Again it has the weak student problem due to open entry.

UWC - The strongest academically but is selective at IB level. Good location (near Holland Village) Good teaching. Very big and a bit overwhelming for some newbies. It's a high maintenance school - Lots going on in terms of charity work and concerts which some students thrive on, but not all.

If your child is a shy wallflower, or thrives in a smaller environment I would recommend ISS without hesitation. If they are high flyers however and into the Arts and/or sport, then UWC wins hands down.

Hi Mother/Teacher,

I am wondering if you have any advice/feedback on quality of teaching and teaching environment in the above schools. I am moving from Australia with a 6 year old and a 3year old that will be starting school in Singapore. I am contemplating one of the above.

Many Thanks,
