Debit card for teens

Post by Lisafuller » Sun, 23 May 2021 11:24 pm

Hi all, my daughter (17) has been thinking about getting her own debit card for some time, and finally decided on one a week ago after much thought. Initially, she thought about getting a DBS debit card like most of her friends (I believe this is the most common option) since she also had an open bank account with them. However, after more in depth research, and comparing the benefits of different debit cards (she looked into OCBC, UOB, and HSBC as well), she decided on the UOB ladies card since there are a slew of benefits for cardholders; most significantly, she loved the complementary dining and shopping vouchers. For boys, I believe they also carry a genderless debit card (can’t remember the name), but I think the benefits are different. Thought this might be helpful for any parents with kids struggling to make a decision.

Nice. I was going to suggest the UOB lady's card as well. There is some insurance coverage on it which is one of the selling points.

I believe the insurance benefits only apply to the lady’s credit card, not the debit card.

The site says that there is coverage for the lady's account which is what you should be getting with the debit card.

Seems like a glimpse into the future... the only options are ladies or genderless... get ready for the knife boys!

Really? There was no mention of such a benefit when we were at the bank. The site lists the debit card benefits as being enhanced security for all purchases, e-commerce protection, and up to a 10% rebate.

Hahaha, you’re not wrong, as of right now I can’t seem to find anything online about debit cards specifically for boys.

Probably because it's a man's world anyway. I don't mean it in a sexist way of course.

Definitely. Pretty sure the banks would come under fire if they introduced a “boy’s card”.
