Withdrawing Citizenship Application
Hi all, probably will get negative comments for this but I am in a really tight spot now. My citizenship got approved and I was in the midst of completing the journey when just recently I received news that my dad (who is living alone, no siblings or close relatives) had a stroke. He's stable now able to talk and everything but he asked if I could go back and take care of him. Looking at my family history, I know he doesn't have long. The right thing as a son to do is to head back and take care of him, and spend his last few years with him.
My question is similar to another guy who posted this in 2013: can I postpone or reapply for citizenship again in the future? And if my REP renewal would be affected, factoring that I will be out of Singapore for 1-2 years within the 5 year period and withdrawing citizenship application? Would appreciate any personal experience sharing and advices. Thanks in advance,

I understand your situation which is beyond your control. your affection towards your father and citizenship are working in opposite way. Why dont you present your case to ICA. If you can prove the genuinity of the case, then there may be some solution possible. If not then atleast you can take a decision afterwards. If you straightaway do withdrawal, then it may send a wrong signal to them and also you may regret later for having not asked.

Thank you. I will try that. Any chance if you know others who have been in similar situation before?vig.srinivasan93 wrote: ↑Sun, 09 May 2021 2:58 amI understand your situation which is beyond your control. your affection towards your father and citizenship are working in opposite way. What is your citizenship now? What is stopping you from taking care of your dad as a Singaporean?

Why dont you still take the SG Citizenship and come back later and continue from where you left? If you deny it now, your REP renewal and also future SG application will be highly doubtful.darrengohssl wrote: ↑Sat, 08 May 2021 8:00 pmHi all, probably will get negative comments for this but I am in a really tight spot now. Yes Singaporeflyer is right. I intend to settle some of personal stuff here and then fly back next month, and probably stay there for a year or so and see if the COVID situation allows me to fly back. The renunciation has to be done in Singapore so I don't know if this long period out of SG is allowed.

It is allowed. You are allowed to exit the country for extended periods if it is for a special reason, such as overseas schooling or taking care of a sick relative, like your father. The traveling that is prohibited is vacationing. Since your purpose is legitimate, you should encounter no issues.

He may be prohibited from staying in Malaysia for a prolonged period after his renunciation though. By the Malaysian authorities. I guess he should try to work it out with ICA and then do what he has to do.Lisafuller wrote: ↑Mon, 10 May 2021 10:41 amIt is allowed. Why are you not accepting it? Think 3-4 times as this decision may be irreversible.avengers8888 wrote: ↑Tue, 20 Jul 2021 1:28 pmDid you eventually withdraw your SC Application after receiving AIP ?
