SPass new application with Master's Degree

Post by klimrona » Fri, 16 Apr 2021 2:43 pm

Hi,

I am an SPass holder with 7 years of experience in IT industry.
My current salary is $4,000/month.

My story is,
March 2019, I finished my Master's degree in the Philippines.
April 2019, I searched for a job here in SG and luckily found one.
July 2019, my first SPass was applied and got approved. That time, my employer did not declare my Master's degree because my master's degree certificate has not released yet by my school due to some clearance processes.
September 2019, I started working here in SG.
November 2019, my degree certificate arrived.
....
Then now...
April 2021, I just got a job offer from a new company. Salary is $5,000/month.
April 12, 2021, my new potential employer applied for SPass. This time, the employer declared my Master's degree as I was able to show them my degree certificate already.
Status is still pending until now.

My question is...
Do you think that my added educational background, which is Master's degree, will not create any issue in the approval?

I don’t think it will have any issues. Should be fairly smooth.

Hi,

I hope that everything is good now. Can I ask, your HR declared under your education just your Master's or both Master and your university degree?

Thank you

Actually the master degree might hurt you as your new salary is only $5,000. That might be quite underpaid for a master degree holder (and government doesn’t want employers to underpay foreigners (as they might need to pay a lot more for a local of the same level of education - like 7-8K plus cpf). 4 months pending doesn’t seem to be normal even during covid.

I’ve personally known someone with a PhD with 8K salary offer and was rejected both S-pass and EP due to “relatively low” pay.

Best of luck!

Some IT companies are still overcoming this by applying work permits under category C which is skilled but the levy is high around SGD 850 per month. But these are for a different category of people nevertheless you may find it useful if this could be done and if you see any benefit in it.
