PR by own merit or by spouse sponsorship

Post by rj000 » Wed, 31 Mar 2021 4:56 pm

Hi all,

Is applying PR by own merit better than being sponsored by spouse?

Also, I heard that I can apply LTVP while waiting for PR result. May I know if I can apply at the same time or need few days- weeks between application?

Im currently holding Spass from 2015 and just recently married to a Singaporean Citizen.
*both in mid 20s
*Wife(Spass) salary SGD 3k , husband(SC) SGD 2,900

Never tried applying for PR before. I am worried that since we were just recently married, (not even a month yet) the chances of approval will be very low if I apply by spouse sponsorship/family scheme

Appreciate if someone can give me advise!

Chances will be close to zero. You will need to be married for at least 2 and preferably 3 years before applying for PR. You can apply for LTVP with no real issues, but your Spouse will have to be able to show she can support you on her salary alone (the figure is somewhere around $4,800/mo salary in order to do this. Your salary is actually too low as well for a PR on your own merit. There is some flexibility if you just happen to be Malaysian Chinese and your spouse is also SG Chinese otherwise it's going to be rough. You should apply for LTVP immediately, but as noted, don't bother applying for PR until 2 years of marriage have been reached. Otherwise, ICA may think your rush is because the marriage is a marriage of convenience just to obtain PR.- Used to happen with great regularity but ICA has gotten wise now.

Hi, I’ve recently got married too! I was a PR when we just married, and my husband’s LTVP was approved within 7 working days after applying. (Our salary around the same range as you and your husband’s)

I just submitted his PR application under spouse of SC scheme, hopefully it’ll work! We are rushing to get his PR because we want to buy a HDB asap 😅

Btw we are both Chinese.

PR under spouse is definitely more doable that under PTS.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Is it a general rule? What if a foreign spouse is earning more than a local spouse? :???:
