Please advise how much money to give in a Wedding Red Packet

Post by Kate2 » Wed, 23 Mar 2005 3:25 pm

I am to attend a local chinese wedding and are curious - how much money is customary to put in the red envelope for the bride and groom???
The brides parents are distant relatives who I see on a regular basis.
Please help me out as I am new to Singapore.

That will hav to depend on WHERE the dinner is. eg, in a 5star hotel, naturally it 'costs' you more, in compare.. eg going to a Hawker Centre...

Also, How much the menu costs that that place.. Say, a meal there for one will cost $100.. so you should at least try to 'foot you own bill' by putting that amount in the red packet.. you know wad i mean?

Gd luck!

About $60 per head, if you're a couple going then perhaps $120. But if the location is Ritz Carlton then it has to be more say about $100 per head.

Rule of thumb is indeed the cost of the dinner. Figure on S$80-100 for a fancy reception in a fancy hotel (which seems to be pretty much the norm among the Chinese, gotta have face!). Ask anybody else you know who is going, they'll be glad to advise you.
