Global Indian International School (GIIS), the K-12 international school in Singapore, offers IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) for its high school students in Grade 11 and 12. Based on its top-notch IBDP performance, the school is quite acclaimed for its IB Diploma Programme.

What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme?

The IBDP is a globally recognised programme that focuses on preparing students for the challenges of university life and the working world. This two-year programme is primarily aimed at high-school students between the ages 16 to 19 years old and exposes students to a wide range of subjects and opportunities to better their understanding of the world.

Because of being based on international standards and having global recognition, a number of International Schools in Singapore offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. But what makes the IBDP at GIIS a powerful offering.

What Makes GIIS Top Ranked IBDP School in Singapore?

Excellent Track Record

GIIS had the vision to extend IBDP to its students way back in 2005 when only a handful of schools in the world offered this programme. Since 2005, the school has shown a constant upswing in the IBDP performance and has achieved 17 World Toppers (45/45 grade points) and 28 Near-Perfect Scores (44/45 grade points) till date. The school’s average score has been impressively high as compared to world average and the Singapore average. In 2020, GIIS achieved an average of 37.65, which is way above the Singapore average of 34.52.

The history of good results speaks volumes about the pedagogy and quality of teaching at GIIS which consistently helps students perform exceptionally well and achieve their goals.

IB-Trained Faculty

A large chunk of the credit for the great IBDP performance at GIIS goes to its faculty, which has a wealth of experience in mentoring students to do well in this rigorous programme.

60% of GIIS teachers are IB examiners, the selection for which is based on stringent criterias by the International Baccalaureate board. Once the teachers are selected to be IB examiners they have to undergo an induction course which orients them with in-depth knowledge of how IB works.

The IBDP is unlike any other high school diploma programme, apart from the academic subjects, students have to work on three core components - Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay and Creativity-Action-Service (CAS), which require specialised guidance from mentors who truly understand the requirements of IB. GIIS students get the advantage of learning from IB trained teachers and perform better in their exams.

Ms Deepa Chandrasekaran, the IBDP Coordinator at GIIS SMART Campus says, “IBDP is designed to prepare students for university and hence the course has many other elements beyond academics. The role of a teacher is extremely crucial in the performance of students, as the teacher’s feedback helps them in bringing out their best in components like Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. Our teachers relentlessly work towards providing detailed feedback and tips to improve the work or assignment, till the time the student is able to reach his or her maximum potential.”

High Acceptance Rate in Top Universities

The IBDP students at GIIS move on for higher studies to world’s best universities. With great scores and numerous achievements and skills that enhance their personal profile, the students are highly accepted at prestigious universities across the world. Name the topmost universities of the world, University of Cambridge, Oxford University, Brown University, Imperial College of London, National University of Singapore (NUS), University of California – Berkley, GIIS students to show, are Many of their alumni have successfully enrolled in top universities of the world, such as London School of Economics (LSE), Imperial College London, National University of Singapore (NUS), and the University of California – Berkley. Students are exposed to career fairs and university open days, which allows them to get a better idea of what they want for their future. Moreover, GIIS has dedicated career counsellors guiding students through the long university application process, such as looking through their personal statements and searching for the right course that best suits their interests and goals

For Indian students this may not be the best option if they plan to return to India, the GCSE system is still widely used for tertiary entrance there. Just be warned and do your research.
