Missed homeleave / holiday payment

Post by ProvenPracticalFlexible » Fri, 29 Jan 2021 6:26 pm

Now that traveling is kind of challenging to all of us, and sending your helper back for home leave would practically mean that she won't be able to come back.

So, how much you compensate for the missed leave and home visit? Just the flight tickets like 500$ or flight tickets plus extra months salary ? Or what's your approach to keep helpers happy over time without meeting their families?

And please save me from any silly they should be grateful to be in safe country and still have a job stuff.

For us, we have had the same helper for 15 years and we don’t follow a rigid home leave schedule. We basically send her back whenever we go back to the US, which has resulted in both longer and more frequent home leave than she would normally get (last one was the full month of June, 2019). We also pay for an extra domestic flight so she doesn’t waste time taking ground transport. Therefore, it’s give and take - she is well aware of the Covid situation and knows we are all stuck here for the time being.

Yes, kind of same approach that she goes home every long travel we do, once or twice a year depending a bit on our schedules. But now that it's going to be (what it looks like) at least 2 years without home holidays for her, I see some kind of compensation is in order.

I’d say it’s a judgement call, considering the overall situation, past, present & future. Not just leave, but the whole comp & ben picture. If it seems fair to you, then it probably is fair.
