Do you miss flying?

Post by Wd40 » Wed, 23 Dec 2020 7:37 am

It has been about a year now since we boarded a flight. Probably a record for us, the convenience of taking cheap flights to nearby holiday destinations, is now like a distant memory.

When was the last flight you took and if this becomes a new normal, no more cheap flights for a long long time, how will you cope?

Feb 14. Don't miss it at all. The idea of doing it now is stress inducing. There were only a few destinations I enjoyed as well (Australia and Bkk).

Certainly don't miss flying. Airports, planes, idiot fellow passengers, uncomfortable, cramped seats, lousy food etc... Nothing I miss there. But actually visiting places - yes I do miss that.

Being just a wee bit cheeky here. I've not liked flying since 1966 when I got my wings and quit flying after my discharge from active duty in July 1968. Add to that, being a passenger in a plane sucks as well as far as I'm concerned. It is, after all, only a greyhound bus with wings and generally crappy food. Sadly it's the only to jump continents without long trips at sea. :P

Last took in Dec 2019. Dreaded the long journeys, long queues and waits at Immigration and at times, irritating passengers. But I generally enjoy it as a family and when I reach the destination with cool/cold weathers.

I miss road trips much more than flying. We often did decent road trips in Summer or Winter and I enjoyed those. Even driving up to MY would be fun now.

I love road trips as well. Malaysia is the only option for road trips from here. My favorite is to Kuantan, which takes a good 6 hours, but worth the drive. The ocean facing rooms at the Hyatt there are a rare find in Asia where chalet style resorts are overwhelmingly preferred for some reason - I’ve never figured out why.

But the best ocean facing rooms I’ve found in all of the Asia-Pacific is the Rendezvous Hotel on Scarborough beach in Perth. That one has a special place in my heart.

The Kuantan Hyatt looks great. I quite like the older style resorts along that coast.

I agree on the Hyatt in Kuantan. My shore-based supplier in Chukai, for the seismic survey company I was the shore-based administrator for decided I should bring my wife & 2 kids up to Kuantan for our 10th Wedding Anniversary (1993) and he gave me a full 3 days there for a present and a veritable feast on our actual anniversary. And yes, we had one of the Gulf of Thailand facing rooms. I used to drive the Singapore to Chukai run 2x a week (coming home on the weekends from Chukai which is about an hour north of Kuantan (80 km). The coastal drive is nice, if somewhat frustrating. I used to travel primarily at night using the central highway where there are only the logging trucks and occasional express buses late at night. Gotta be careful on the coastal road not to hit a goat!

PNGMK, bet you know the company and possibly the vessel I was servicing, don't you! ;-)

Looks nice. Pity the route is not scenic (at least for what I could get from the street view).
Any experience using roadside assistance of AAS/AAM on such a bit off the popular tracks roads?

I miss visiting home. But I do not miss flying and I am dreading having to do it with all the new rules and procedures due to COVID.

I don't miss flying as of marinating my ass off in the undersized seats for 2-12h, but I miss the buzz surrounding them, takings off, landings, Changi and some other airports, sipping wine or beer while waiting for the flight... I don't fly often for business so the flight means for me holidays or family visits and these make them sort of part of the package too.

Yes - you just wait longer. They will come. The route is more scenic further north.
