Years ago, we had a guy die in our apartment back in Europe. The smell built gradually but was unbearable after a few days. It was the smell of death, unmistakable. It took less than a week for the authorities to resolve the situation.

I am at a complete loss how they all managed to ignore it for this long at The Shore; the pong must have been so much worse, given Singapore's heat.

Not to mention the compassionate reasons they had to just check in on the lady, WLE!

Max Headroom: Precisely...how was the smell was detected for 2 years? I mean that's really strange and why didn't it occur to neighbours you didn't see the elderly neighbour for so long, and letters are left on the door step for such long periods...

PNGMK: I think good neighbours play such an important role in community spirit and helping to keep an eye on each other. And not just 'Hi' and 'Byes'...

A smell emanated from the unit, but was not detectable subsequently, according to the resident who was in and out of Singapore, and who said the woman did not appear to have visitors.

Apparently nobody gave sh*t about the old lady and was willing to take any action.
Also the dog probably must have been barking for some time, Better not to analyze this part in details.

For the smell, SG vs Europe, not sure. European flats are more sealed to outside, in Singapore they are not sealed at all and there is usually some drift. If for some reason this drift comes from the corridors/yard it may not be that obvious, but per the quote above, not a point here.

I've since learned that in some of these dead loner cases, the body actually mummifies, precluding any putrefaction process and smells associated with this. I guess this lady could have had the air-con running full-blast, in which case the room's humidity may have been low enough to enable mummification. Pure conjecture on my part though.

It crossed my mind. I have one neighbour like this. Then again, if she was 80++, stopped being seen and there would be this rather unmistaken stench of death?
