Rental housing

Post by abbby » Mon, 09 Nov 2020 12:53 pm

What would you choose if you were to rent?

1. Rent close to MRT, shops, but rent is $1,000/month more

2. Rent further from MRT but rent is lower by $1,000/month. But drive.

Both sizes are about the same.

No drive, walk to MRT. Stay fitter. Also got bus you know. No need to always base on MRT. Sometime bus faster mah?

A relative question for sure. 1k more or less from 1k, 5k, 10k, 20k? Makes quite a big difference. 1BR, 2BR, etc

Distance of course also matters, what's close or far is relative, 100m, 500m, 1km, 2km, that's probably max distance from met in Singapore?

Agree with PNGMK, driving is a fitness killer... have never owned a car in my 24 years here, the wife does (she has to do her tiger mom thing). Now with Covid, cycling has been my thing - mask free and cost free, double bonus!

Why does living far from MRT imply drive ?? 1000$ is enough to mix Grab/Taxi and Walk and u will spend less than 1000$.

Driving = owning a car?
IMHO to own a car in SG more reasons than no nearby MRT or even inconvenient bus connections are needed. I believe for many locations it would be still cheaper and more convenient to rely on grabs/cabs.

Having said that we are living in such location where we reasoned out we needed a car and it was also the case where the condo was less expensive because the nearest MRT was like 800m away. My wife drives the car dropping the kid at school on her way to work (1.5-2h by public transport, SGD25-35/day by grab/cab). I ride motorbike.
Earlier, our son was in a school located in the Seletar area (we live in Bukit Batok), we work BV/Orchard. Without a car this would be mission impossible or few hundreds $ more relying on grab/car.

In other words, do the math and see what better works for you time and money-wise. <120 min commuting (total a day) may still be acceptable, longer than this affects IMO family life.

Depends on the car you intend to get.

Cheapest Asian Brand’s, fair enough. But if you are going for high end European sedans and SUVs then it wouldn’t matter since you would probably be intending on keeping up with the Joneses.

Currently in Redhill, there is nearly a $1.5k disparity in condos located across the road from each other, due to MRT proximity (50m walk).

Thanks for all the advise. I think I'll be looking forward to either bring close to a bus stop or MRT stop, within 500m seems like a reasonable walk (and good exercise).

Seen quite a few condos rather central and convenient ie: MRT, shops, but I don't think I could quite used to the noise (traffic, MRT noise). So doing off with the convenience of shops could get me some greenery and quietness.

Another question: Has anyone requested for new WC for their rental?

Abby - you can request anything. Always best to request before renewal or signing of lease.

Good rental units get snapped by fast currently.

Surprising given the current pandemic. I suggest to minimise requests in order to get your choice unit.
