Looking for advice on healthcare provision

Post by paul2w » Sat, 24 Oct 2020 6:39 pm

Looking for advice on healthcare provision.

My wife and I are intending to settle (retire, not with employment) in Singapore sometime next year.

I am a UK citizen. My wife is a Singapore citizen. I will need to have healthcare insurance. I am not looking for ‘the best’, ‘the most extensive coverage’. I will be looking for something that provides good coverage.

I am 60 yrs old, and in good health.

What health insurance companies should I be looking at? What is a ’ball park’ figure for annual cost?

Any advice/information/guidance would be gratefully received.

Thanks, Paul.

You will probably be looking at hospitalisation insurance, that can cover you in case of any hospitalisation and also Personal accident (PA) insurance for coverage on accidents ie falls, injuries, etc. Hospitalisation insurance are usually run in a few thousand and PA insurance usually a few hundred dollars..

Hi Paul, some of the companies you can consider are AXA, Bupa, Cigna, Sompo and Tokio Marine. Since your wife is a Singaporean (and if she has money in her medisave account), you can also apply for a local plan called integrated shield plan from providers like AIA, NTUC, Aviva, Raffles Shield etc using her medisave to pay for both. Basic premium for your age will be around $2,000/pa out of which you can use $755 from her medisave account!

Hi Paul,
You may also consider Great Eastern's hospitalisation plan.
plan for private hospitals:)
base plan around $2k per year +rider around $1k per year for Age next birthday 61; $755 can use your wife CPF to pay
Rider covers up to 95% of your total hospitalisation bill.

Paul - if your wife is a Singaporean AND if you can get in on an LTVP to Singapore and then pivot to PR in a year or so you may have access to the following:

Your wife's Medisave account (if she has any) - I think being an LTVP is good enough for this.
Govt subsidized care at public hospitals - you need to be a PR for this.

In general outpatient care (GP's, specialists) is not outrageous even if you're paying full price but you would probably want coverage for a catastrophic event I agree. You could use a travellers insurance policy for the first year for that.

You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

As an LTVP holder under your wife, the most cost effective option is probably going to be an Integrated Shield plan under your wife’s Medisave. Do some Google searches, you’ll find LTVP coverage analysis, often using an example of a mother from Malaysia who comes to live with the family in Singapore, but the same applies in your case. If you are issued an LTVP+ you may even get subsidized inpatient medical care in certain situations.
