converse: on what legal basis can the gahman prohibit you from exiting?

No. Very few exemptions for Aussies. Fortunately I am not back in the penal colony.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Interestingly, Kiwis have no such restrictions.

Australia's stance actually took me quite by surprise & I find it instinctively disagreeable for a 1st world country. I believe Japan had a similar policy until recently. I suppose they both have their reasons.
