Additional Documents for PR - Employer Letters

Hi All, I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered before but I couldn't find a thread on this. I have past employer recommendation letters from 2017 and I am planning to submit a PR application soon. Will it be worth the effort of getting new letters from my past employers with dates of 2020 or is it alright to submit the old ones?

If they have new material from a current employer maybe. If they are from past employers I would not update them.

I'm not sure why there's this obsession with recommendation letters ... do they really help?

Maybe trying their luck on PRs and Citizenships now.

In the old days they were used extensively... you couldn't function here without referral letters for banks, jobs, club memberships etc...
