Morale of story of pandemic: Never put your eggs in one basket?

Post by abbby » Wed, 02 Sep 2020 9:29 am

Does it make sense? After seeing people in only one type of business like Genting Group, mainly focusing on tourism.. hotels, taking a hard fall when pandemic happens. Not sure if they forayed into other businesses like property development, healthcare, etc...?

When you do a high class MBA they teach that diversity is not necessarily the pathway to success believe it or not, because a pandemic is once in a century event. There is some math around to show that you should diversify somewhat but not too much. So you own a casino in three different countries and consider yourself diversified forgetting that there can be a common mode failure point.

I think the MBA courses would need to relook into their theories. I think at some point it is good to diversify, some businesses foray into new ventures of a totally different trade. And when the industry booms, they get a fair share of money-making. Casino giant should have forayed into other trades other than entertainment and tourism. I don't know but I have the feeling they could be on a downfall at this rate they are heading.
