University undergrad SC rejected

Post by Jay.anne » Tue, 25 Aug 2020 7:29 pm

Hello all,

I am writing to get some advice for steps moving forward from my Singapore citizenship rejection. Should I bother with appeal? And when would be best time to re-apply?

Some background,
22, Female Final year undergraduate
Applied: Feb 2019
Outcome: Aug 2020
At point of application, I was in my 2nd year of University, studying full time.
Lived in Singapore with family since I was 3 months old, so got my PR since secondary school. Parents are PR, brother got citizenship last year (but I understand for guys it's easier cuz of NS).

My best guess is right now my application is just not favourable due to the lack of "economic worth". So should I just apply again after securing a full time job next year?

As you are now past the age of majority (21) you are on your own, your PR was based on your parents providing support. Now, as an adult you (technically speaking) cannot depend on family support by law (not that your parent wouldn't). As as adult you now have to meet the criteria under your own credentials. This will mean you will need at least two or three years of full time employment to gain, a) a means of support on your own; and b) The ability to prove you will not be a burden, but an asset, to the country. However, what is not noted in your post is where you are from. If you are Malaysian Chinese, that time frame will be probably shortened considerable, to the point you may just have to wait on the current application.

Unfortunately, I am not Malaysian Chinese but Filipino. Thank you for explaining clearly. Does having past working experience internships (2-3 full time), help in any way? Or would it be purely based on my job post grad? Are there any other factors that I should consider to improve my chances during this 1-2 years before I reapply?

Now you are applying by yourself, you will be measured on your own merits, which usually means, salary and ethnic group - but also your potential to contribute to Singapore more generally.

I suspect if you get decent job, and pay taxes for a few years, the gahmen might look more favourably on your family connections here (your bro is a SC). But it wouldn't be a guarantee.

Marrying a SC and staying married for 2-3 years would be more certainty, but is SC worth it just to get married?

Work for 2-3 years and then reapply.

Honestly, your guess is as good as ours.

"NOTE: ICA takes into account factors such as the individual's family ties to Singaporeans, economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile and length of residency, to assess the applicant's ability to contribute to Singapore and integrate into our society, as well as his or her commitment to sinking roots."

This is about the only broad stroke thing that anyone trying to advise you knows.
We have seen, heard or known enough exceptions to challenge every expert opinion we've dished out here. (Except if you are Malaysian Chinese, or to some extent, other SEA Chinese - that is the only certain edge that seems to overpower all other criteria).
