Do you and your family use government hospitals or private hospitals?

Post by abbby » Tue, 18 Aug 2020 4:18 pm

I always have the impression that private hospitals are less crowded, less queue, more conducive, and better doctors. Has anyone used government hospitals before for stays? ie: surgeries etc.

National Eye Center, National Skin Center.
These i've been to. Pretty good value.

I've also tried Mt E at Novena.
Pleasant stay. Recommended if your insurance covers it.

I've been here 38+ years and have had occasion to be hospitalized in 4 different government hospitals. No complaints in any of them (from TTSH, Changi, SGH & KTP). Never used a private hospital although my Daughter has thanks to her upmarket employer (Maersk).

I have been to a number of private hospitals - like being in a hotel!

My mom was sent to SGH due to an accident. The A Ward (single occupancy) room was decent. There was a long wait at the ER wards before she could get to the A ward. Understandable, since the SGH ER is one of the busiest.

If you want the best go to a government hospital. The washout medicos unfortunately end up in the private system.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Thanks that's good to hear so I guess it's only the more popular hospitals like SGH that probably has a longer waiting time. Otherwise, services and the facilities just be the same as private.

SGH has a reputation for being the best government hospital in Sg. I think NUH comes 2nd.

As for private hospitals, foreign dignitaries/royalties are known to patronize Gleneagles/Mt Elizabeth Hospital.

NUH and SGH each have their strengths.

My family only stays at private hospitals. Our favorite by far is Mount Elizabeth Novena. The staff are so patient and professional, which I’m sure is the case at government hospitals as well. However, the hospital rooms are incredibly comfortable, reminiscent of hotel rooms, and the food is pretty good as well, definitely much better than what you would find at a government hospital. The government medical centers that we’ve been to are pretty much just national skin center and national Eye Center. Both were great, but I’m not sure they count as hospitals.

Well, I've spend a couple of days in Changi and Khoo Teck Puat, I've used services in SGH, TTSH as well but not inpatient. We've had both of our children delivered at KKH. Could never see the reason to spend the money on private hospitals here. But if your insurance is paying for it, then yeah, go for it.

I’ve chosen the private version of everything since I’ve been here. Fortunately I’ve never had to go to the hospital but I do use IMC for clinical services. I’ve herd nothing but good things about most of the local hospitals though.

I’ve been fortunate not to need any inpatient services during my 24 years in Singapore, but I’ve experience with TTSH, Gleneagles & Mt. E.

The time I ended up at TTSH it was for a broken ankle. That was close to 20 years ago. Honestly, I really didn’t notice a major difference in the quality of the facilities or doctors at TTSH vs Gleneagles/Mt. E. The only major difference I noticed was the heavier paperwork/administrative component at TTSH.

For GP visits, I fully agree with the PP on going to IMC. Many times I’ve been disappointed with the quality of local doctors at the GP level here (specialists are usually great, not so much for the GPs). I suspect the local GPs who are good end up practicing overseas for better money.

In Singapore, the quality of the public hospital is actually quite good. the only concern is the waiting time, but if your condition is more urgent, public hospital will also give you priority.
