Covid-19 Tracker installed without notification on phones

Installation of trackers on mobile phones.
Google has installed a Covid-19 tracker on Apple & Android phones with their last update. They are currently off, but just to let you know. I received by messenger from a relative in the US a while ago so I checked (I figured it was the conspiracy theory BS) Sure enough, it is also been installed on my Samsung Note 8 under Google settings but with it in the off position. I reckon it will be turned on without notifying the user as well.

Just checked. It's there. But it's not a clandestinely installed app, or anything sinister like this. Both Google and Apple have been discussing releasing software to battle Covid-19 openly. With this release, they're enabling any actual Covid-19 tracker app to communicate with the cell in question.

In other words, you need to install an actual Covid-10 tracker app first and then switch it all on for tracking to be enabled.

Yup SMS, they installed the exposure notification system, correct. It requires additional software in order to operate though. It's pretty innocuous I reckon. For now anyway.
