Just curious why Rolex Daytona value so much?

An extremely rare Rolex Daytona ref. 6264 “John Player Special” has set a new record price for a watch sold in an online auction. At least 133 pieces in 18k gold were made but only a handful of Rolex Daytona John Player Special watches (made during early production runs of this batch) exist and they rarely appear for sale; hence, this edition sold for a record for £1,215,000 (or $1,545,723) at the recent Sotheby’s auction.

“It is difficult to overstate the rarity of an 18-carat yellow gold 6264 and the fascination it rouses among vintage watch collectors. ‘Holy grail’ and ‘icon’ are often used to describe the Daytona JPS.” – Sam Hines, Worldwide Head of Sotheby’s Watches

Daytona is a great investment piece.. Sadly the prices have already gone up and its quite pricey now, even preowned pieces.

Rarity and high gold content (most gold watches are 14K not 18K (Higher purity of gold) due to the softness of the metal. Only made around 133 pieces in 18K gold in total but the John Player Special was only a hand full (only about 10 examples are known to exist).

Correct. Only 10 are known in the world. The JPS Datona Rolex watch is the same as the one that was worn by Paul Newman in the movie but his was stainless steel not pure solid 18K gold (not gold plated). It's not PURE gold as that is 24K and much to soft for anything except bullion coins.

The grey market is selling new stainless steel Daytona double the retail price!

There isn't any Daytona in any of the retail shop, if there is allocation, it will be snapped up and then resell in the grey market.

This is keeping the prices artificially high.

I think Rolex creates it's own demand by restricting supply. How sustainable that is in the long term is anyones guess, fashion is a fickle thing. It's why some of the major luxury fashion brands destroy unsold stock at the end of the year. They want to maintain exclusivity.

It's not that long back when digital nearly killed the whole Swiss watch thing. The industry has certainly recovered.

I feel we as consumers view is two different thing come watch, digital smart watch like Apple watch is totally different from traditional Swiss watch, the build, how it works etc .

If one is a person crazy about watches i feel he/she will own two , one is digital one is traditional
perhaps digital watch he/she will wear it while at work , gym

traditional depends maybe go for important function, or meeting , causal meetup

The value of a Rolex Daytona and a digital smartwatch like an Apple Watch can be worlds apart in terms of craftsmanship and functionality.

Agree. Although Apple Watch can do much more but it will not be as desirable as a Rolex. Mechanical watches are admired for their craftsmanship, precious metal and other intangible factors such as branding, status symbol and lots of feel good factor.

Hahaha

Dealers always write customer names down for the long waiting list. But I doubt if the list really moves at all!
