Actually I was told by an ICA officer that someone who is approved under family ties "might" be called up for NS "if" MINDEF chooses to. However, in practice, they don't - at least that's been the norm so far.
You mean someone can get called up to serve after they're past enlistment age?
Talking about someone who is less than 40 years old.
Still, they can be called to serve the full 2 years? Wouldn't that present a huge disruption to their careers?

This is fact. I was told the same thing when I got my PR. But as I was already well past forty when I got my PR it was never an issue even though I volunteered my services as a Instructor Pilot (Rotary Wing) if they need one with combat experience. But I was getting close to Officer retirement age here (50 for officers) so was thanked but not required. But they did confirm that had I been in my mid-30s (the age when I arrived here), in a national emergency/police action if I'd have been a PR I could have been called up as a last resort (it's on the books but unknown if anyone has even been actually called up in modern times.)
Interesting, doubt we've ever had that big of a man power shortage in a time of crisis to necessitate using them though.

Like SMS mentioned, I think it's probably a possibility in desperate times - like if there's a war or some serious civil unrest in which case it's quite possible that everyone's careers and lives are disrupted.

I see, I was referring to people having to serve the full term of enlistment, not being called up in the event of an emergency.

I think some clarification is needed here from my side. I got my PR via the FT scheme. And yes, you can be called up if under the age of 40 if on the FT scheme, however, again, unless you are a volunteer, I don't know of it ever happening but the legal means does exist. However, 1st Gen PRs under the PTS scheme are exempt from NS (so as not to upset their career paths as that was the reason they were given PR in the first place). However 2nd Generation PRs of PTS AND FT schemes are liable and have to serve NS or else.......
