Would a US bought TV work in Singapore?

Post by JMV » Mon, 25 May 2020 12:05 pm

Hi all,

Setting voltage aside, would a TV bought in the US work in Singapore? Would some, none or perhaps all newer models work?

Ps. Correct to assume all unlocked cell phones are more expensive in Singapore than in the US?

1. It won't work for digital broadcasts which is what all Singapore FtA TV is now. It will work for HDMI connection to your cable box which is probably what you will use.
2. Phones here are cheap and unlocked. Are they cheaper? I imagine the difference is small.

Thanks! Ahh... so then I guess any TV, even if an older one, would work?

We have an older Samsung and while not the latest and greatest, does a perfectly adequate job as a bedroom TV.

I imagine would need another voltage converter though so not sure if worth the hassle...

Most modern TVs are dual voltage. Google the part number. It's probably got an 220V equivalent

Indeed, you are right:

Nominal Voltage: AC 120/230 V
Frequency Required: 50/60 Hz

I was an electrical engineer when I was younger :) I designed thing but didn't fix them so the joke about engineers in hell is wrong below - it should be an an engineer technician show up at the Pearly gates after having crashed their car because the technician fell asleep at the wheel (true story).

An engineer and his technician dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says "Ah, you're an engineer and a tech... you're in the wrong place." So the engineer and tech reports to the gates of Hell and are let in. Pretty soon the engineer becomes dissatisfied with the level of comfort in Hell, so he begins designing and the tech begins building improvements. After a short while all of Hell has air conditioning, flushing toilets, and escalators. And the engineer and tech have become pretty popular guys in Hell.

A couple of month's later God calls Satan on the phone and says with a sneer: "So, how's it going down in Hell?" Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We now have air conditioning, flushing toilets, and escalators. Why, there's no telling what my engineer and tech will come up with next." God replies "What??? You've got an engineer?? and a tech!!!! That's a mistake, they never should have gotten down there... send him back immediately." Satan says "No way. It's nice having an engineer and tech on my staff. I'm keeping them." God screams back, "Send them back up here or I'll sue!!!" Satan laughs uproariously and answers: "Yeah, right. AND JUST WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO FIND A LAWYER??"
