For me, it's whatever the authorities impose.
Likewise. I have my doubts about the usefulness in many situations but I'm not going to argue the point.

So not a big impact those rule breakers are having. So either it doesn't matter or there really aren't that many of them to have a real impact.
So far Singapore has only around 0.5% of the population infected. A small fraction yet it triggered a lockdown.

If you look around the rest of the region, lockdown decisions were made with only 0.01% incidence of infection. These numbers are all fractions of the population.

COVID has really turned out to be a very different game to flu, until we can:

1) be certain infected people develop total immunity
2) deliver an effective vaccine with total coverage
3) have effective drug treatment

Singaporeans, by far and large, cannot be trusted. There has been enough online vids and pics as proof of that. If they were smart they would eat at their desks even though some employers forbid it in the past.
So if by your opinion Singaporeans cannot be trusted to follow the rules, who in this world would you trust to follow orders? Your US countrymen? North Koreans ?

I mean seriuosly, if there is a country where people follow the rules as a majority and neighbours will snitch you if you don't, North Korea is the leader but the following ones ...
We were not talking about all other countries. We were talking about Singapore. I was addressing Singapore. You sound like a Singaporean, if you don't like what you hear, you deflect by trying to compare with other countries that are not even being discussed.
I am a Singaporean. Why do you made such a sentence regarding Singaporeans? If you don't like Singapore then why do you bother to come here!!!!! It is because you cannot earn a living over your country ?????? Annoying!!!!!

For what it's worth, I thought SMS' blunt statement was a bit uncalled for as well - everyone's fairly stressed out during these unique circumstances, and riling each other up probably isnt' the best use of everyone's time and energy.

Stay safe everyone.

I've been here 38 years. I've been married to a Singaporean for 37 of them, I have two adult Singaporean children and 2.5 Singaporean Grandchildren. My tenure as a RC member and office bearer had provided me with a pretty good insight to the minds and habits of Singaporeans, generally speaking, in particular those who live in HDB housing estates (75% of the population) and I'm pretty sure my estate is probably representative of most estates seeing the government uses draconian racial policies to fill the blocks and estates. Want to continue?

Isn't it the truth.

You would need to relate it to some average of the fraction outside the estate at some given time period and perhaps during normal situation as well, not to the whole population living there.

The impact is another thing that we may or may not agree, but for the sake of the argument, if you replace covid infections with, for example, number of homicides, you could also say based on the logic above, no major impact to the society.

Surely there are scenarios where it is safe not to use the masks outside. We can rationalize different situation. At the same there will be dozens of people witnessing you, making wrong conclusions and translating them wrongly to different scenarios where not using the masks is unsafe. Social responsibility.

Sure x9200,

I would say for the sake of argument with you that yes, homicides in Singapore have no major impact in the society here, very rare, which is of course great. Obviously then when someone is killed it has a big impact to that family. But don't think comparing that to CB rule breakers is really on same level. Maybe traffic accidents and especially pedestrian fatalities would be more in similar category, were I think (haven't checked any stats or study) quite a big part is caused by jaywalking, running over red lights etc.

I'm not defending the people braking the rules, or they bad example. Just saying that it still seems to be quite small percentage of people and not seem to cause much new Corona cases. If it was very wide spread and common would expect some new clusters on those hdb blocks.

This analogy to homicides is actually less absurd that it may seem at first (e.g. the No of fatalities resulting from flaunting the rules is the same order of magnitude, just the connection is less obvious and it is not premeditated), but perhaps better analogy would be drink driving. Small fraction, not significant impact to the society. Should we stop bothering, criticizing, penalizing?

No, obviously not. But if the drink driving problem was getting worse should reach to it stronger, campaigns, mandatory alco locks to all cars etc. Otherwise continue as currently.

now if Corona is not spreading much, should we make more stricter rules and more controls and panic about a few people pending the rules. Or consider that it is working pretty well and no over reaction needed even if there's a small minority pending the rules, yes give them a warning or fine but really not that big a deal. It would be quite different if that was half the population out there not caring about the rules.

Lest we forget the superspreader in the beginning (at the conference downtown) who subsequently went to Spain and the UK an infected 15 or 20 individuals and was asymptomatic as well. Don't forget to throw the wildcards into the mix.

Yep, but currently it's gonna be hard to become a superspreader with the lack of big events. A few people at void deck or smoking at yellow square won't give good chances.

One thing I am glad the masks will be good for - curbing those excessive public displays of affection, especially on the MRT.

Wouldn’t mind the masks being enforced longer just to cut those out...
