And I'm willing to bet he will have issues when he next tries to renew his REP.

6 of them got their work passes revoked and were banned permanently from working in Singapore.

I must admit, given the visibility of the their actions and the public backlash on social media, I thought they had dodged a bullet when I read the first article. Of course the bullet followed from MOM. I guess it makes sense given the times, but does seem pretty harsh.

And while the courts did say that they are not influenced by social media, it seems others might be. They should be thankful they weren't caned.

It's best to see Singapore as the transactional entity it always was.

People are here for one reason only: To trade and make money & both sides benefit.

You break the contract, in this case the government's intention to avert a profoundly deep economic crisis, and you're out.

It's just (a) business.

You are correct Biggin - that is how LKY set it up. LSL has made it feel a bit more soft but at it's core it is not.

I noticed one of the couples had been here for 14 years - children in local school etc.

I think their REAL mistake here was to "settle down" in Singapore on an Employment Pass.

Not a good strategy.

As an EP holder, you're a company sponsored transient business resident, essentially a faceless entity with zero rights, apart from 30 days to clear your apartment.

If they've been rejected earlier for PR, they should have made plans to leave Singapore eventually, however painful that might feel.

Harsh for sure, but Singapore is just not "that kind of place". Unlike many developed countries, there are no long term residency criteria beyond the black box of PR acceptance. There's physically no space here!

With PR being a fairly challenging goal post for the "Others category" (as per the usual criteria), I'm personally questioning whether it truly makes sense for this particular global demographic to settle & invest long term in Singapore going forward.
