My friend's turning 39 this year. She plans to have her 1st child by trying via IVF. What are her chances? I understand chances decreases as you reach 40?

They have to test both her and her partner for few blood tests and scans. Only then the chances can be known. In general yes, >35 years the changes get lower. But to say how much, you need those tests

Yes, might be a good idea to visit the fertility doctor and be tested. Having to try is always better than not trying. Although I know the chances are slim.

Bumped up by a spammer. What happened finally? My wife and I were considering IVF at some point but decided against it because we felt that the chances of a successful pregnancy were still too low.

I can't recall tje chances of a live birth now but it has improved a lot since I explored it in the late 90s. I think it's down to 1 in 3 chances but the egg viability is a huge factor and old eggs (they are the age of the donor) are not as viable. FYI in general terms egg viability drops off post 36. At 40 it is 50% and it drops to 10% by 42.

Typically fertility decreases after 35. I’ve heard IVF success stories of women much older than 39, she should have a good chance. No harm trying.

Pretty sure the tests are part of the preliminary IVF process to determine suitability.

My thoughts exactly, fertility waits for no one, the alternative would be to freeze your eggs then you can wait as long as you’d like.

Yes, frankly 39 is not outlandish, she shouldn’t have much of an issue at all. I’ve had friends conceive naturally at 41-44.

Oh my, I didn’t even look at the dates and replied to all the comments, got so invested. If you didn’t mention it I wouldn’t even have noticed hahaha.

Wow… 10%? I’ve had friends conceive naturally at 43 even, had no idea how long the chances were. I only knew that fertility tends to taper off at 35

Yes it's that bad. The actresses and public figures have babies at 42 plus are probably using donated ova.

The thing is that you typically only hear about the success stories. You often don't hear enough about the miscarriages and the pain associated with them, emotional and sometimes physical.

How can the baby still look like them though? Pretty sure most of the actresses were able to afford to freeze their eggs. Not sure how much that costs though, I’m sure it’s really pricey.
