Why is this not enough to live in Singapore?

Post by hellototheworld » Mon, 02 Mar 2020 3:27 am

I've currently live in Ireland and have a job offer to move to the UK.
The salary offered is $6232 per month (after tax) and I will be given free medical insurance plus a relocation allowance of $4000.

I'm 25 years old and single. I want to move to Singapore to get away from the high crime rate and terrible weather where I live and also travel around Asia on the weekends.

I have to accept the contract next week however before I do that I just want to be entirely sure I will be able to live comfortably.

I've worked out the following budget per month:

$2000 ( room)
$225 (Transport, Mobile Phone)
$600 (Food)
$500 (Traveling Asia on weekends once a month)
$800 (Fun/Entertainment/Drinking)
$300 (Shopping/Clothes)

This leaves me with $1807 per month.
Have I missed anything? I've been told by so many people that I would be insane to move to Singapore with that Salary but I can't understand why.

You're young and you'll gain a ton of experience here. You get to live in a place you want to. You get to travel around Asia.

Looks like a no-brainer to me.

By the way, for $2000+, you can get a decent condo, i.e. an entire condo. Alternatively, you can save 1K and rent a condo room. Don't listen to agents when it comes to property, purchasing or renting; most of them think it's still 1999.

You have more than enough. 2000 a month for rent isn't necessary. If you really must live by yourself then you can look for studio apartments out of the city. Eventually if you meet someone then you can rent somewhere bigger together and bills will be combined and therefore cheaper once again.

I think your first sentence has a typo (singapore instead of UK). The offer of 6232 sgd after tax for singapore is actually enough for a young single person to live on with savings. If you are willing to share a condo, the rental will be 1200 sgd for a room with an attached bath/toilet or about 800-1000 sgd for a room with a separate bath/toilet. The price may vary depending on how far it is to the city and to the mrt stations.

They're just jealous!
That money is more than fine for a young singleton.

Just come out here and enjoy

On your budgeting you've missed of utilities, such as water, electricity and internet. They're not the cheapest here, but no more expensive than the UK.
Good that's you've got medical included because that can be expensive. Just check to see what it covers though as most company's cover here is crap.

And if you don't like the price of Tiger at hawker stalls, order Anchor, it's local, just like Tiger, and a lot cheaper and is actually my choice (between that and Tiger).

I like Corona as well, but I can more easily afford Anchor when it's available.
