Thank you. 5 months still seems far too long for something that would be automatic if he were born in Australia. Has anyone had any other anecdotal experience.

Overall I am deeply disappointed in the Oz govt as an Aussie expat. The flight caps, the disastrous hotel quarantines, the lack of support for stranded Aussies, your issue with paper work. It's just a clusterphuck. Oh and the raping of young women in parliament house.

I tend to agree! I called the department of immigration in Sydney to ask for further guidance and in complete deadpan they asked me why my child couldn’t be Singaporean instead? I do feel like there is a narrative that if you’ve not chosen (or been able) to come back to Australia in this period, you are somehow not a ‘proper’ Australian. Consulate doesn’t seem to offer many services either other than being an impressive building.

Yes, exactly. Fortunately I am married to a US citizen and my retirement plans no longer involve Australia.

Compared to Australia, the US is not exactly a panacea, but at least you’ve got more options and taxes are not as stiff (for now anyway).

If your wife has or can get in 10 years of Social Security contributions, you both can enjoy retirement benefits (worldwide) and Medicare (within the US and territories).

I need to get my wife back to the US for a minimum 5 years so that she will qualify for social security benefits under my work record even if she is overseas. That will add 50% to our retirement payments no matter where we live, and if something happens to me, she will get 100% of my benefits for the rest of her life.
