How To Keep Ice Longer In A Yeti Cooler

The Yeti cooler is the best cooler for ice retention and is one of Top Rated Camping Coolers Image. However, any Yeti model functions as well as an ice chest, right?

No. It can only maximize the performance if you apply some helpful tips for keeping ice longer.

Chill your Yeti cooler

Ice will melt little by little, especially if you store the Yeti cooler in a warm place. Therefore, you should put it in a cool place or apply a sacrificial bag of ice to cool the whole model down in a few hours before using it.

Bring more ice than needed

Let you follow a “⅔ ice and ⅓ other contents” ratio.

One-third is used for holding your food and drink while the other is filled with ice. The more ice you store in cooler, the longer it can last.

Choose a block and cube ice

While cube ice can chill both the whole model and everything inside quickly, block ice melts slowly. You should mix block ice and cube ice to chill your food and drink to achieve long-term ice retention.

Don't leave much air inside the cooler

Please take a look at this fact:

The best ice cooler will cool areas of air inside in place of your contents, so the ice-melt rate is faster.

DON'T LEAVE A LOT OF ROOM IN YOUR COOLER.

Instead, try to fill the cooler with food, drink, and ice. However, if you are worried about the weight, you can consider towels and crumpled newspaper.

Don't drain the water

Don't empty the cold water while you are using the cooler.

Why?

The water element insulates the remaining ice.

But, pay attention to keep your food away from the water, especially meat.

Keep your cooler from sunlight

Without direct sunlight, your ice can last up to twice as long. In case you can't find a shaded spot, cover your cooler with towels or tarp.

Access your cooler as few times as possible

When opening the cooler to take something, the warm air outside will go inside to get cooled. Thus, it results in ice melting faster.

The best solution, in this case, is to organize everything from small to bigger items. Once you know where food and drink are located, you can access them immediately without digging around too much.

Use dry ice

Dry ice used with Yeti hard coolers can keep your cold and frozen items longer than regular ice.

Bonus tip: using rock salt to keep ice from melting quickly

Sprinkle a little rock salt on the top of your ice, then close your cooler tightly. You need to wait within 30 minutes before opening the cooler.
