Questions - Relocating to Singapore

I also bring my notebook along on my trips to Singapore. I subscribe to a SingTel dialup account, use it at the hotel where I stay, since the hotel doesn't have broadband yet. However, the throughput is appalingly slow. I cope, though, coz it's just for a month or so.

When I need to download and upload big files I go to Chills, which is a decent cybercafe near Raffles Hotel. Speeds are ok, much, much better that my so-called 56K account, though not even close to the 2+MB download we have here

Once I get to Singapore in August I'll apply for ADSL at the condo I'm staying.

Let's meet up then, you'll be able to tell me how your account is faring

BTW, thanks Pal for those URL's. Incidentally, you're keeping a look out for a condo for me right? Now that I mention it, could you include this broadband criterion also please. IOW, the condo will need to be ADSL-ready. Big cheers!

If there is a phone line, the telcom company will modify the line and ADSL can be installed.

thank you PAL for the three websites. Very good information, but I think it`s better to be in Singapore first. I read the things about different internet connections yesterday, but I first need exactly information from my company, where I will live. If there is a telephone line, etc.

But I have two more questions Please help me again...

1.) Do you know where I can get a VERY BIG and VERY EXACT MAP of Singapore online ?
2.) Are in Singapore places where you can get massages from girls like in Thailand ? (meaning: no sex, only for relaxing... )

Sure, all over the place... but not at Thailand prices, and I'm not too sure how you can sort out the legit massage places from the karaoke-sauna-turkish bath-massage places.

Gotta agree - Very hard to find normal massage places.

Try anywhere in shopping centres as they general are legit and very good.

Do somebody knows, if there is a bank in Singapore which has a partnership with a bank in Germany ?
I would prefer to open an account here in Germany. And the conditions would be better to transfer money between the German account and the Singapore account.

Maybe one of you could help me to find the right massage studio, when I`m in Singapore I`ll try to find the right one

Thank for the list jpatokal. I will contact the HypoVereinsbank in Germany next week. The bank is on your list, and I heard from a friend of mine, that they have a HypoVereinsbank in Singapore, too.

For ALL people who like to go to Singapore and live there, I found a VERY, VERY GOOD book. It`s called "Culure Shock! - Singapore - A guide to customs and Etiquette". I`m very happy with this book and I recommend it. 8)

Hey Patrick, regarding your query on internet services, just make sure you get one without a contract. Most internet plans comes with a year contract, so read the FINE prints before signing anything. If you are not fussed with speed, My Singtel provides a 56k dial-up without contract. Pay as you Use. Every hr will cost you approx. $1.20 and toll charge at $0.84 = about $2.04 /hr. Hope this helps!

I got here just over a month, but so get used to broadband over dial-up, so subscribe to starthub broadband service, even I am not sure I want to stay in singapore for a year or 6 months. The penalty will be SG 120 dollars if you terminate the contract within 12 months. But think of all of convienance, I still go ahead.
