You'll be fine. Visa is automatic for US citizens. Go through passport control. Go to Jewel and then come back in via departures.

Just be careful with luggage - you either need to check it through to destination from Phuket or collect it and drag it around Changi before checking in again. I would check it through.

There is a baggage storage place in Jewel (level 1) so if you can't check it through you can store it there until you are ready to leave again. Not actually used it myself so don't know what the prices are like.
