Relocating to London

Post by bodhidg1983 » Mon, 25 Nov 2019 2:07 pm

Hello All,

I understand this is a forum to ask questions about moving in to Singapore. My question, though, is for moving out of Singapore, to London. But being unable to find a suitable forum, I am asking my question here. Please do direct me to the appropriate forum if the need be.

Receiving a compensation of 140,000 SGD annually here in Singapore, with a wife who is currently not working, what kind of a compensation should I be expecting for a similar quality of life and saving if we do move to London ? No kids as of now.

Any help/inputs in this matter is highly appreciated.

Thanks

Convert SGD to GBP 2:1 if you are not British, don't own a home and need to start off from scratch.

i.e. GBP 70,000

Even that may be a little light. I'd probably try for more.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

I'd work out your take home pay in Singapore (after tax, CPF etc) then use a UK tax calculator (this one seems reasonably up to date https://listentotaxman.com/) to work out what you'd need to earn to get the equivalent in your pocket in GPB. The overall taxes you'll pay (including National Insurance) will be 3-4 times more than you pay in Singapore so there is a significant difference in what you'll actually have to spend.

Then this website https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/c ... ty2=London will give you some idea of the cost of living differences though that will very much depend on the lifestyle you are after so it's hard to make generalizations.

S$140k is around GBP70k take home.
To take home that amount in the UK you're looking at a salary of around GBP100k.
So around a 30% uplift in salary. Good luck, you'll need it.

What field of work are you in? London is just as, if not more competitive than Singapore as there's a much larger talent pool to choose from.
