Citizenship by descent- Singaporean mother Australian born girl

Post by Heidi12 » Mon, 04 Nov 2019 7:13 pm

:???: Hi guys, my husband and I are in planning stages and unsure weather in the long term to have our child grow up and school in Singapore or Australia.

I am a Singaporean born citizen with Australian PR, and my husband is Australian born. Right now, we are planning to give birth in Australia, and possibly apply for citizenship by descent for our child (assuming baby is a girl).

The question is, if she renounces her Singapore citizenship at age 21, will she still have the option and be able to work/live in Singapore as a PR later in the future if she decides to return (for example when she’s 40yrs)...?

The key is that we don’t wanna jeopardise her options later in life for having mobility and choices between both countries.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thank you! :D

I will throw my 2 cents based on my own personal account. I forbid anyone to do this if you are not ready for the pitfalls. My daughters were born in Singapore. We left for Australia when they were young. We did not renounce their SG citizenship when they turned 21. What we did is when we entered Singapore, we either use the Oz or European passports. Never once we use Singapore PP since the day we left Singapore. Now my daughters have their own family and both still hold SG, OZ and European passport. I only renounced my two sons SG citizenship as that is mandatory in order for them not to be drag by NS liabilities. This I did with utmost precision, hell, I am the one who put out the protocols in this forum, once I have tested it myself. I only did this after months of research.
I am not encouraging anyone to do this as this is my personal choice. We did what we did after discussing this as a family. No regrets nor any sentimental feelings attached. My daughters even applied their SG passports and got renewed years ago. There are no immediate ramification for SG females holding foreign passport once turn 21 except your SG passport will be canceled if caught and a fine of $1K from memory.
My boys and girls turned to be alright. Again , you must make the decision as a family. There are opportunities out there outside Singapore. You have to be brave and make those hard decision. Once you decide , thick or thin, stick to it. Don't come running back to Singapore coz, they will not give you any quarter.
Personally you can give birth in Singapore and do what we do.
Or give birth in OZ and apply for Singapore citizenship before she turn 1 .
DO NOT APPLY SG PASSPORT.

Use the OZ passport to stamp a Reentry Permit on the child passport. This you can easily do it here at ICA. She can then have a Singapore style education like any Singapore child. The only thing she does not have Singapore PP.
Once she has matured enough then take her through both pathways. Only then either apply Singapore PP which in turn she has to renounce OZ PP. Here is the good thing OZ constitution allows you to renounce your OZ citizenship and regain before the age of 27.
These guidelines has been there out in the open.
OK, I am not taking questions after this.
Good luck
@misty ;
This is the core of the problems with Sgers, you guys are so doctrinated by the system and the people in power that you cannot make decision for yourself.
You need to be spoon-fed and hand hold every turn
See this played out with Sgers all the time. Grow two or more cojones for pete's sake.

1. I do not reply to PMs anymore. Do not PM me
2. You need to read my post in bold and really understand what it means
3. All your questions via PM are answered on this posting. You just need to read carefully
4. If you are thinking of just visiting friends and family , why go through the hassle of applying OZ PP. You are already a PR here unless you want to take advantage of the super and other benefits
5. If you do wish to go down this route, go ahead apply OZ PP and keep it at your back pocket. What they do not know, don't tell them.
6. You will have about 4 to 5 times to renew your SG PP. Do it back home. Keep it simple
7. If you intend to procreate, please do not apply your child SG citizenship unless you are very sure that the child will stay and be Sger. Complete waste of time if you already living in OZ
8. When SG Gahmen dangle you some carrots , do not be fool. There is always a catch. There is no such things as free lunch in SG. If you do apply for OZ citizenship and so on and so forth, you must be prepared to face any consequences thereafter with SG Gahmen. They are destructive, vindictive and extremely oppressive. I do not legalize nor do I disapprove it, you throw the dice, you take your chances. That said, how many Sger go down this route , plenty. How many get caught, plenty. See the ramification and then decide.

Yes, she can work here provided she has the right qualifications and experience to find a job and gain an Employment Pass or an S pass at least, just like any other foreigner would. If she works the required number of years and then applys for PR The government will NOT do her any favours because of being a ex citizen. In fact. They sometimes frown on it, but you buys your ticket and takes your chances. The law say she 'can' apply for PR but will not be granted citizenship again. As they look at PR as a stepping stone to SGC, she could be passed over as they will already know she'll not be given citizenship. It's a gamble, to be honest. The ability and the laws are there, but they are skewed in their favour, needless to say. As you are a Singaporean, you would already be aware of how vindictive they can be.

Good post MS. Plenty of women dual citizens around. Main issues:

1. They cannot get their CPF out
2. They have to be super careful not to present the wrong passport when entering or leaving Singapore.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

Hi @Mad Scientist,

I would like to check with you as I am a SG female living abroad for half my life, and would like to find out if I was to take up Oz citizenship. How would I retain my SG passport and even renew it in the future whenever it expires? I am keen to understand based on your daughter's experience, as you mentioned that they have Oz passport and even managed to renew their SG Passport.

So question in summary is
1. How to retain SG citizenship & PP after taking up Oz citizenship
2. Which passport to enter and leave SG whenever travelling from Oz?

Thank you aplenty!

How old are you ? Better not to do such things. This is only for kids till they reach the right age at which they have to renounce one of the citizenships. Why do you want the benefit of both the places ?

To have their cake and eat it too, obviously.

I would almost say, anytime you do anything that expresses less than full commitment to Singapore, you should be prepared for potential negative consequences. That’s why you have to think twice before taking any steps toward SC or PR unless you are prepared for those expectations.
Every great and deep difficulty bears in itself its own solution. It forces us to change our thinking in order to find it - Niels Bohr

Currently in my mid 20s.
To keep SC is honestly to visit family based in SG on a regular basis.
Honestly speaking there is really no "cake" to eat on both sides.
Intention to taking up AU is for my partner, as I have alr been an Oz PR for the past decade to begin with.

With a AU passport you are given 90 days to stay on each entry. Also don't think that is a valid reason to break rules and hold dual citizenship against SG rules.

Jesus Christ, I thought this was a safe place to ask questions and there are people here just trying to bring others down. These are all questions asked before any actions were taken, the "cake eating" you claim. That didn't cross my mind, but yes you are right. Absolutely right, I forgot SC had that privilege, I mentioned I have not been in SG for the last decade.

If people here can be more chill and not try to bring people down and claim so and so, that will be amazing. Nothing illegal has been done, it was all just a comment to seek advice. It seems like there are a large number of people doing this on the forum that's why I'm asking. Given the strong negative response and "advice", wouldn't go down the illegal route.

But can people just calm down and not try to be the national police and try to paint others in a negative light.

Be assured we are not trying to bring you down. Trust me for this. We just don't want you to make a wrong decision and later repent that no one told you.

I definitely have not made a decision or any action, which was what prompted me to come here in the first place.
But I would sincerely appreciate a more neutral tone rather than finger pointing that I have made so and so action, and claiming that I have did ____ action and gone against so and so by do ____ action.
At the end of the day, everyone is here to seek advice, not to be get thrown under the bus and accused of.
