COE Cars

What are the pros and cons of getting a COE car? Pros - cheaper? Cons - more repairs?

They are the only kind you can buy. COE is certificate of Eligibility which is just a slip of paper that says you can buy a particular car. If it's a 2nd hand car, it will already have a COE certificate and the purchase price will include the remaining value of the COE as well.

Not necessarily. 10yo could be still a good car. Many people buy COE cars. For me, I wouldn't mind purely based on the age, but just dealing with the sellers, all sort of ..well... imaginable every year or shorter time is really repulsive.

So based on condition and lower mileage should be considered a safe bet?

...and some would also say, No of previous owners. But again, it doesn't necessarily mean anything wrong with the car.

COE cars are harder to sell secondhand. They have a far lower paper value and the depreciation drops to zero at the end of hte COE. Parf cars (those with COE and residual PARF which is a form of import duty) tend to be more desirable as there is a residual value at the end of the first 10 year COE which makes it financially easier to move onto the next vehicle.

However I am driving a 12 year old subie so it obviously is ok by me.

COE cars has higher interest rate if you are taking a loan.

Reason being there are no PARF rebate as collateral and if you default payment, the finance company can only get back the left over COE value.

COE prices vary with time and it can become very pricey in Singapore. Fortunately, there are many automotive websites that can provide guidance.
