Studying in Singapore with a baby

Post by northpig87 » Fri, 20 Sep 2019 11:10 am

Hi all,

My wife is from mainland China, and she is considering a one-year Master's programme at NUS starting Feb 2020. Our daughter (Chinese) will be about 8 months old by February. My parents (Canadians) are both PR of Singapore and currently living and working there. So we'd love to be able to arrange for my daughter to spend the year in Singapore as well.

So my questions are two fold: first of all, has anyone had experiences or knowledge of an international student on Student's Pass taking his/her dependent into Singapore? If so, what kind of visa do we apply for the kid, and can this be done through the school as a packaged deal?

Second of all, if the above method does not work, can my PR parents apply for some kind of long-term visa for their granddaughter? The only visa I know of is the typical 1 month visitor's visa, which unfortunately is not long enough.

Thank you all very much for whatever information you can share!

Oh, I won't be going, just my wife (Chinese) going over to NUS to study for one year, and hopefully we can find a way to have our daughter being there as well. My wife has only visited Singapore couple times as a tourist in the past. She will be going this time on a Student's Pass I'd assume.

And to clarify futher, I will be staying back in China working, and will occasionally visit them in Singapore as a tourist (I have no residency status in Singapore).

Dad: Canadian in China
Mom: Chinese going to Singapore
Daughter: Chinese hopefully going to Singapore
Grandpa: Canadian with Singaporean PR living in Singapore
Grandma: Canadian with SIngaporean PR living in Singapore

When looking up the eligibility online, there is no long term visa possible for a dependent of a student pass holder. But you can ask ICA through email or through a phone call if there are exemptions.
