Outsourcing Is The Trend These Days



With so many companies implementing their own outsourcing scheme, most of the permanent full-time staff may start to feel rather insecure in their jobs now. Even the Singapore Government is keen to outsource manpower in various Ministries.

The best way is to make use of whatever time you have now to further your personal education. You cannot predict what is going to happen to your present position in the near future. Same goes to all other contract-based staffs.

Outsourcing is both good and bad. On the bad side, one loses job security, pension benfits, and what have you. That's exactly why jobs are being outsourced.

On the other hand, it's a natural progression. Companies get larger and larger, doing more things beyond their core strengths. After a while, they decide to go back to core strengths. So instead of 10,000 people working for one mammoth company, they cut back to 2,000 and 8,000 jobs are sent to other companies, who... guess what... employ people.

It's mostly a wash in the long run, but there are real advantages for someone willing to go after the outsourcing business. You can start your own company, or you can work for a smaller company which is often a lot more fun than working for a big machine. Or, you can go to work for a big company that specializes in outsourcing, like a lot of IT firms do.

It's horri-bi-ba-ble, I tell you! Next thing you know, they'll outsource us expats from our home countries to Singapore, and what will happen then?

Thing is, everything in big companies is cyclic. New manager comes in, changes things to fit the way he used to do them at his old company <he has to change stuff or why else would they have canned the old guy?>; 2 years later he gets canned and it starts again. Outsourcing is the same; times get tough, costs need to be cut, people get outsourced. Start making money, realise that service is crap and insource it all again. If you're good at your job you will always be employed and hopefully you can improve your position on every swing.

Change is the norm. Get used to it and you can reap the benefits. Worry and live in fear of your job all the time and you'll get screwed every step of the way...
