Getting a teaching job

Post by matthewbartlett » Thu, 22 Aug 2019 6:01 pm

Hi all,

I've been offered a job in Singapore, and my girlfriend – a teacher - is considering joining me. We'd like to know more about her prospects of getting a job as a teacher. She has an undergraduate diploma and three years of experience teaching elementary school at a private school in Washington DC.

- Is it too late to land a job for the upcoming school year?
- Does she have the requisite experience to land a job at a school in Singapore?
- What are some good teaching-related jobs she could consider as a backup if she's unable to land a job for the upcoming school year?
- Are there any particular online job boards or resources she should be looking at?

Many thanks!

The International Schools all have career sections on their websites. Her best bet is locum (part time substitute) position at this point. However getting a workpermit is not possible on that basis and you'd have to sponsor her on a Dependants Pass.

www.iss.edu is an international job board for school teachers.

There are two school years here - the Southern Hemisphere one which is Jan - Dec and the Northern one which is Aug to May so there some flexibility to application dates. Normally the NH ones are filled in May/June and the SH ones in Oct/Nov/Dec.
I not lawyer/teacher/CPA.
You've been arrested? Law Society of Singapore can provide referrals.
You want an International School job? School website or http://www.ISS.edu
Your rugrat needs a School? Avoid for profit schools
You need Tax advice? Ask a CPA
You ran away without doing NS? Shame on you!

American curriculum International Schools in Singapore:
Singapore American
ICS.edu.sg
Chatsworth
Overseas Family
International School of Singapore
Canadian International (I think uses Ottawa curriculum but my US wife taught there ok)

Probably more.

I noticed there are a lot of "tuition centres", I don't know how else to describe them, which I think support school kids in becoming more proficient in some subjects. I know of some foreigners who got jobs tutoring, though it was because they had a specific skill (e.g. teaching a foreign language). But it might be something to consider? (you'd need more research as I don't know much about them).
