HSBC or DBS

Post by Willows » Fri, 12 Jul 2019 5:41 pm

Hi all

Going to be moving over in the next month or do (from Sydney) and wanted to get a bank acvount sorted.
DBS seem to have loads more ATMs than HSBC. Just wondered what the consensus was on service from them both.

Cheers

I feel like a butito add - why not get both?

I predominantly use Standard Chartered, but the ATMs are not redily available so I also have a DBS account with a few hundred for just in case. Moving money from one to the other is easy and immediate (and free).

You can also use giro (auto deductions) to pay tax with DBS, I dont know if HSBC offer this as only a few local banks do (my info here is a few years old and may have changed). You wont get interest on your money so use the one that has the best features for you, and have a DBS as well as their ATMs are everywhere.

If you have a Stan Chart account you can use HSBC, ANZ Bank, Maybank, State Bank of India and Citibank (selected locations) ATM's. Citi does not work at the airport.

No ANZ ATMs anymore, DBS bought out ANZ retail banking last year. You can use Bank of China ATMs as well. I've got an HSBC account, banked with them in the UK so was easiest to get an account here, and tend to use Citibank ATMs as they are at a fair few MRT stations so are easier to find. As SE says not all Citi ATMs are available for HSBC (or others) though so you have to check for the ATM5 logo on the machine.

I like Maybank. They are part of the "5" ATM group (ANZ, HSBC, Standard, BoC, SBI and some others now) so ATM's can be found fairly easily. As they are not popular with locals they don't have such long queues as Damn Bloody Stupid, Ugly Ordinary or Ordinary Bee Chai bank. Also their customer service seems to be friendlier and their online systems works great. They are now with NETS so you can do POS transactions as well.
