IT - how to know if my email has been read?

Post by martincymru » Tue, 09 Jul 2019 1:37 pm

for example

[email protected] sends email to [email protected]

Can [email protected] determine if the email has been opened/read by [email protected]?

You mean like to be certain? Nope, no way.

Possibly, if it's a mail that has yet to be sent.

abc can add a return receipt and will receive notification when xyz opens the mail.

However not all mail platforms support it and in cases where it is supported xyz can opt out of sending it.

You can ask but the recipient needs to allow, and I for one, never give that information out. Whether I read your email or not is for me to know.

In any event, the most that the receipt could do is indicate that I opened your email, not actually read it.

From what I read somewhere a while ago, "'read receipt" feedback to the sender is based on a small embedded pixel in the email. So if you have a default of "load images", this pixel gets loaded automatically and the sender knows for sure the time and location that you opened it, regardless of whether you explicitly allow read receipts. There are browser add-ons that can automatically generate this pixel and track this pixel for all a senders outgoing emails. To get around this, I set my email to "prompt to load images", but most worthwhile emails I get don't have images in them anyway.

You need to include a read receipt for this, but that can be denied by the recipient. If its an important mail, request the other party to acknowledge.
