Separate arrival EP/DP

Post by Stillcitrus » Sun, 09 Jun 2019 9:25 pm

Hello Singapore Expat forums!

I am moving to Singapore later this summer from the UK along with my wife. My EP has been approved and I have received my IPA letter. Similar for my wife, her DP has been approved and IPA issued.

I'm British and my wife is from Italy and understandably would like to spend some time with her family before relocating to Singapore. Looking at flights, it makes more sense for her to fly from Italy and myself from the UK. We'll aim to arrive within a few hours of each other, flight times allowing.

Is there any problem with her arriving in Singapore on the DP alone? Or do we need to be together? I've tried googling the question but not had much success.

Thanks very much for any help! :)

No you'll be fine. As long as she is carrying her IPA letter with her she'll have no problem travelling separately.

Hi there! I see you've moved to my lovely country, Singapore. I hope you're having a good time here and you could adjust to our crazy hot weather. :)

This is a long shot but could I get details on how you managed a move here? My employer's a British citizen like you are and he's planning to move here with his business permanently. You mentioned you have an EP (is that an employment pass or entrepass?) Any information at all would be helpful. Thanks for reading and I hope you've settled in nicely with your wife! :)

EP is always considered to be Employment Pass

Hi Edward, sorry for the delayed response. But yes, have been here two months and settling in quite well (I'll try not to be too much of a stereotype and complain about the heat, though the Italian wife is loving it here compared to the UK).

I am here with an Employment Pass. I originally saw an advert on Linkedin for my area of expertise, applied, and a few weeks later had a Skype interview. Waited for a few more weeks, was accepted and the employer than handled all the visa/pass issues with MoM. From original online application to actually arriving in Singapore was around 3 -4 months (I had 3 month notice period in my previous job too).

I work in quite a niche research field (I won't specify what, as it is so niche as to be self-identifying), so when an opportunity becomes available I take notice. I didn't really apply specifically because it was in Singapore, more just because it was my area of expertise and whatever career path I take I wish to stay in my field. I was very happy with my previous work/role in the UK but just fancied a change of environment. The change of politics in the UK was also a factor I admit.

My field is not well established in Singapore. Hence there is not much local competition/experience for my role, but there is a need to expand this capacity in Singapore. I also have many years experience/degree/previous wage was acceptable (ie it is not a big pay jump for me to be here) which all together works in my favour.

The research institute I work at also invests quite heavily in overseas talent, and so they are quite familiar with the Employment Pass process and handled pretty much everything for me and my wife efficiently.

I am sorry my experience is probably not going to be a lot of help to your employer. If he wishes to relocate his business here from the UK he will be wanting to apply under the EntrePass system which will be very different to mine. As I said my employer handled everything for me and is well experienced in the process.

Anecdotally (from chatting to people/bosses at my institute), if your employer wants to be successful in his EntrePass being accepted, his business case/plan must be able to show how it will bring high paying jobs to local Singaporeans.

Thank you so much for replying! I never expected it! I'm Rachel and I work for Edward.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with me and helping me ask around at your workplace. I'm really happy that you were actually able to move to Singapore successfully with your wife. It's great that your employer helped you to settle all the visa/pass issues.

Singapore's heat is insane! Even as a Singaporean myself, I complain about the heat all the time. If there's anything I could help with, please let me know. Moving a new country is always hard and it always helps to have some local friends! :)

There are hundreds of threads in the business and career sections about what it takes for an expat to start/move a business to Singapore and live/work legally. An Entrepass will be quite rare.
