Too much tiger beer

Post by confusedman » Thu, 16 May 2019 9:55 am

Just thought that this belongs here.

An actual conversation between me and my Japanese wife:

wife: do you remember xx and xx (our Japanese couple friends)? They have a newborn and they named him Tiger because they conceived the baby in Singapore.

me: wouldn't it be lion instead of tiger then?

Wife: why?!

me: Singapore symbol is lion not tiger, it's in the name: Singa means lion. Tiger is a symbol of Malaysia.

my wife:

couldn't stop laughing about it. i think japanese had too much tiger beer .. and they think tiger represents singapore.

If it helps, Singapore's also known as one of the Four Asian Tigers... Better than nothing?

Someone recently told me that they would not go on the Tiger brewery tour simply because the first beer you must drink at the end is Tiger. The problem with Tiger is it’s over-carbonated and lacks depth of flavor. I’m not sure what it is, maybe the hops or lack thereof?

It's the soapiness that gets me Mal. I guess your over carbonated issue.

Wowsa! Ya think? I recall the big brown (660 ml?), ice cold bottles of Tiger beer as being exactly the thing to slake a thirst... refreshing, light but with flavor and body.

Compare that to the horse piss they sell in the USA as "beer". Bud, Michelob, Miller... and worse... their "light" counterparts... Bud Lite, etc. This is horse piss that the horse has drunk and pissed back out again.

A few places in town sell Tiger here, and I'm always glad to get it.

In conclusion, and with love and affection: Ya need to check yer ferkin' taste buds!

Yes, tiger is so over carbonated, to the point of being closer to a soda or seltzer. I tried the lemon radler recently. Delicious, but as a soda, not a beer. It lacks the distinct alcoholic taste and dryness that I love in a good beer.

too much sugar. I like Tiger Crystal more - a lower ABV as well and doesn't seem so soapy.

Could be a nostalgic affinity, we have all been there - it doesn’t take much to get physically exhausted and dehydrated in this oppressive tropical heat... even an ice cold Anchor beer can hit the spot (SMS?) 8-)

I used to like Bud Dry when it came out... it was better, but not great. I used to pick up 24 packs for $9.99 in Indiana on my way back to Michigan for our beach parties on the weekend, and even got $2.40 back in deposit, net cost under 32¢ a can!

In the US, you can get a good variety of imported beer at specialty stores. I remember trying my first Tsing Tao there... seemed pretty exotic at the time - how little I knew.

Yes, I have a special affinity for Anchor. Although I do like my Corona and occasional San Miguel ('peens").
